6 days and no approval

Post by Rockatot »

Hello,
I am new to the forum and moved to VA from FL 20 months ago.
I am somewhat dismayed at the time it takes to get approved here. See my other post under "state approval". I am an exGuard serviceman having served 8 years back in '57-'65 a life long NRA member and avid gun enthusiast. I worked 27 years for Lockheed Martin and had a Secret security clearance.
I am into my 6th day and even the gunshop hasn't returned my calls.
I do feel less parinoid after reading the many. many discussions on this topic.
I am having trouble figuring out this forum thing, how to post, navigate, etc. But give this old timer,I'm in my 73rd year, some time and I'll get'r goin.
I have always joined gun clubs wherever I lived because I believe in supporting our sport .
Looking forward to sharing our shared interests. Now, if I can only get my approval for my PTR91 and 380 body guard I can go back to sleep!!

Have you applied for your concealed permit yet? That sped things along for me. And welcome to Virginia!

Hmmmmmmmm..... I wonder what the check system looks at to determine Virginia domicile. Last time I checked, "residence" was about like "domicile" - physical presence with intent to remain; but I assume the background check software looks for things that indicate that. Like whether you voted/paid taxes/tagged a car in Virginia. Could it be some nitpicking little thing like that?

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.

Here is a recent posting I submitted on this very topic under a different heading.

I've been told and it seems to hold true. That if your a "slow" approval or a "delayed" approval you will almost always be one. Your only hope is to perhaps address it with the state police. But understand there are usually several factors that go into it. 1. how common is your name? 2. do you provide your SS#? (this works in your favor to do so). 3. were you born out of state? 4. do you have misdermeanors in your background. This is not the end all or be all, but these are things I've been told are common.

One of the things I do is shop first and look last. I tend to have an idea of what I want before I go to the show. I've researched prices and know what I feel is a good deal. A few ot the better priced (and bigger) dealers will talk to you before the show arrives. This also helps ensure they have what your looking for onhand if you struck a good deal. Another thing to consider is this. Knowing your a "slow" or delayed" approval. Complete your paperwork at your local dealer and leave. The approval is good for 30 days. Return at your leisure.

I'm sure this doesn't solve anyone's issue with the system. However, for me. Doing away with checks all together as someone suggested is crazy IMO. Hell it could be worse. We could be in NYC or DC right?

:welcome: to vgof!

there's really no rhyme nor reason to why delays occur. theories range from: gun show weekend system overloads to having a security clearance slowing things down. who knows...

Welcome aboard, young man! :welcome:

I would give the VA State Police a call. You might need your ATF form number, or they might be able to just look you up by name. You can call them here: (804) 674-2292
