Affordable/Accessible Range in NOVA?

Post by wpoppert »

My son, who is currently going to school in DC, is looking for a range in Northern Virginia, preferably close to a Metro station and reasonably priced for a college student's budget. He recently attended a convention of campus libertarian organizations, and many of the students from DC schools expressed an interest in making a group outing to a range on the freer side of the Potomac, but nobody knew where to go. Anyone here have any suggestions?

Affordable/Accessible Range in NOVA?

Contact the NRA HQ in Fairfax. I'm not sure what their rates are, but they've got a range there.

Sharpshooters in Lorton. Not near metro though. Don't think any ranges are really.

The only range that rents firearms would be blue ridge arsenal in chantilly assuming they do not have any of their own. NRA does not rent. BR is a bit out of the way but you can get to it via metro bus from metro's nutley street station.

At sharpshooters you have to have a monthy membership, that could get quite expensive between gun rental, range fee + membership and ammo .

How many students want to go if you dont mind me asking?

Joeshmo, thanks for the tip. Not sure how many students at this point -- my son just told me that several of the students from DC schools at this libertarian convention expressed an interest in going to a range. Sadly, I don't imagine that there are likely very many libertarian undergraduates in colleges anywhere, let alone DC. Also, given that they are all attending schools in DC, they would need to rent guns in NOVA (unless any of them are actually from there, but then I think they would know where to go shoot). Given the endangered species status of non-liberal college students in general, it would be nice if a range would donate the range time, waive fees, or at least offer a discount in order to promote the sport to a new generation. At this point, though, I'm just trying to find someplace feasible for them. I do appreciate your advice and will pass it along to my son.

One solution I do see to keep the cost down is to take them out to clark brothers. If it was durring a week day meeting them at the vienna metro station and take them out to CB so all they have to do is buy ammo, cheap ear plugs and shooting glasses. Personally I would be willing to let first timers use my .22, shotgun, 9mm and a few others. Unfortunatly I do not have a school bus to take more than 4 out at a time. Possibly a few other members would be willing to do this? I would as long as they understand the dangers, range rules and act in a mature manner to the T. Because CB range is not busy durring the week days it would be a ideal situation. Any other indoor range I could see there would be lane issues and constant infractions.
