Anyone here a private investigator?
If so, what did it take to get certified? I am looking to obtain my certification. Is a CHP required? Any tips or advice would be great!
Re: Anyone here a private investigator?
I'll be going into the field likely within a month or so. I would get in touch with a training school that offers the course, and see what the requirements are. I personally have my CHP, and I would recommend getting it either way.

I'm not a PI, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express, one time.

I'd say your local Community College can set you up with some courses.

Go to VA DCJS web site for information on requirements. http://www.dcjs.virginia.gov/pss/howTo/ ... igator.cfm

I've already looked there but was just wondering if anyone knew of any agencies that offered the training etc.fireman836 wrote:Go to VA DCJS web site for information on requirements. http://www.dcjs.virginia.gov/pss/howTo/ ... igator.cfm
But personally I am a little dissapointed in the responses. I wasn't asking for an opinion on whether or not you like PI's, or if I should carry a badge around. I was merely asking because it was something that I thought would be interesting to me and thought it could be something to do in my spare time. To each his own though.

Awww, come on. It needs to be fun around here from time to time as wellMWhiteDesigns wrote:But personally I am a little dissapointed in the responses. I wish I had some good information to share with you on this topic, but I don't...so instead, I might feel compelled to make a joke or post a silly picture of a CCW holder wearing a sash like his permit makes him a beauty queen or something.
I wonder if ProShooter might know anything about what it takes to be a PI.

I agree. My apologies. Just got out of the bed on the wrong side this morning. Burnt my hand ironing my shirt and then got rear ended on the way to work.allingeneral wrote:Awww, come on. Re: Anyone here a private investigator?
Hey there,
I am a registered PI in Virginia. The DCJS webstie will give you all of your information, but here are the highlights.
Individuals are "registered" as PI's. Companys that they work for obtain a PI license.
To get your PI registration, you need to take a 60 hour course. There's a listing of schools on the DCJS website. Then you have to take an 8-hour in-service course every two years.
Your standard citizen concealed carry permit DOES NOT cover you to carry while working as a PI. You must obtain a "firearms endorsement" from DCJS. This means you must take another course and qualify on the range, and follow-up annually with range qualifications.
I do not have the endorsement, but they told us in the PI class that you must qualify in the caliber you are going to carry, but you can qualify with multiple calibers at once.
Hope this helps.
