NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
Got a phone call from my daughter today. Seems like in another couple of years the governor of Virginia is going to be called
"BUCK" and his wife will be "DOE".
BOTH my daughter---2011 Toyota and my son-in -law, 2010 Ford F-150 have hit deer in the last two weeks. BOTH vehicles are in the bodyshop and their insurance company is paying for repairs on BOTH vehicles also. Sounds like the deer outnumber the humans in that state. Any chance the Government will make an effert to "THIN THE HERD, where it is the most problematic?" NAW!!!!!! the inviromentalists wouldn't hear of that, right? Anyone want to ask if hunters from AZ could hunt half price and have a bag limit of 6 Bucks??? JUST DREAMING
"BUCK" and his wife will be "DOE".
Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
You are applying slightly defective logic. If you want to reduce the deer population in an area, killing bucks will not have the same effect as if you took out the same number of does. If you wanted to make a dent in VA's deer population, an every day is a doe day season would help cut the population. After all, bucks don't bear the young and one buck can inseminate multiple does.
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
I've hit a deer before; Eastbound I-64 at the Quinton/Bottoms Bridge exit. It was like hitting a damn wall.
A buddy of mine hit a deer on at least 6 different occasions in the same vehicle; each time, the car had those deer whistlers on the front. I've concluded that those things must attract deer instead of repelling them.
These days, I am constantly screening for any sort of creature that may jump in front of me.

Maybe I should sell my rifle and buy a Ford or Toyota?. Now if DMV would just issue hunting licenses...
Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
They can't repel or attract deer. Due to the doppler effect they can't project sound forward. IE they don't work because they cant.SHMIV wrote:each time, the car had those deer whistlers on the front. I've concluded that those things must attract deer instead of repelling them.
Next time youre driving stick your hand out the window, it will go back as the car moves forward, same thing will happen with any sound waves the whistlers created.

So THAT'S why you can't hear a train blowing a whistle as it approaches an intersection... Doppler Effect!Kreutz wrote:Due to the doppler effect they can't project sound forward. IE they don't work because they cant.

How fast was that car going, anyway???LOL!!Kreutz wrote:They can't repel or attract deer. Due to the doppler effect they can't project sound forward. Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
Uhhh, you be drivin' faster than the speed of sound? If so, I'd agree with you.Kreutz wrote:

I'm not saying they are effective in repelling deer... but if someone blows a whistle in a car coming towards you, yer gonna hear it unless their doing Mach+.
Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
The speed is irrelevant. In fact, if you travel faster than sound you'd be guaranteed to hit dear as they'd never hear you coming, since, you're well, traveling faster than sound.meak99 wrote:Uhhh, you be drivin' faster than the speed of sound? If so, I'd agree with you.

The closest analogy is a siren. Sirens are audible as they approach because they actually emit waves, a simple deer whistler strapped to the front of a vehicle does not.
As the air moves into it nothing is propelled out/forward. Any air currents entering into it to generate sound would go back/towards the driver and thus not doing a thing to deter deer in front of the car.
Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
I'm aware of Doppler effect - it changes the frequency, or perceived tone of a sound coming from an object that is traveling towards/away from you. I'm not buying the claim that these little whistles are only projecting sound backwards though. Even if they did, sound waves do bounce around - and would have some reflection off the front surface of the car, no?
Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
Uh, no. If the deer whistle makes any sound at all, it is emitting sound waves too. Doesn't matter if it is powered by wind or by electricity or compressed air. Now, we could shift (get it? shift?Kreutz wrote:Sirens are audible as they approach because they actually emit waves, a simple deer whistler strapped to the front of a vehicle does not.
If this were true, you couldn't hear a referee blow a whistle if his back were to you, and you wouldn't hear a gun's report if it weren't pointed in your direction (just to get us back to guns!)... That Doppler Effeeeeeeccctttt is mighty powerful!Kreutz wrote:As the air moves into it nothing is propelled out/forward. Here's an interesting deer whistle read...with lots of numbers and figures.
http://www.bioacoustics.uconn.edu/repor ... 0FINAL.pdf
I think the conclusion was... "uhhh - depends on the deer!"

Thanks for the report, but there are apparently some words missing... specifically, the word "Doppler" does not show up in that silly report anywhereallingeneral wrote:Here's an interesting deer whistle read...with lots of numbers and figures.
IIRC, there has been a lot of past concern that the passive whistles don't really work and, in response, a powered whistle or two (or 50) have been marketed. I know someone who bought one for a motorcycle and claimed they had no apparent effect on deer on the edges of the Colonial Parkway, but they startled dogs in his neighborhood and horses visibly shied away, too. I believe he said it was switchable "on" and "off" for that reason. I never rode with him, though, so this is just a bit of heresay...

Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
Well, this is fun. I had no idea how popular the idle mention of those silly deer whistlers would be. All I was doing was pointing out that they seem somewhat less than reliable, lol, I wasn't all that interested in the scientific's of it.
What I do find interesting, though, is that Rick just happened to have an in depth report on deer whistlers handy. 'Cause that, there, is just random.

Re: NEW GOVERNOR FOR THE STATE????
My father used to sell those things. He, and the distributors he sold to, called them "deer calls".
Think about the old saying "deer caught in the headlights". When a deer sees or hears something they don't understand and don't recognize they freeze and stare. They're trying to figure out if the noise or object is something they need to flee from.
If the whistle is actually producing any noise, all it does is make the deer stop in it's tracks and stare. If they are on the road at the time then you have venison-burger and a messed up grill/hood/windshield.

I vote for the "PA System" approach. If you see a deer on the side of the road, grab your mic and yell at it "FREEZE!! DO...NOT...MOVE!"BW1911 wrote:IIRC, there has been a lot of past concern that the passive whistles don't really work and, in response, a powered whistle or two (or 50) have been marketed. or if you see one in the middle of the road in front of you, grab the mic and yell at it "HEY!! YEAH, YOU!! GET THE HELL OUTTA THE ROAD BEFORE YOU GET KILLED!!"

I've got one on my Jeep Wrangler, and yes, this method works!allingeneral wrote:I vote for the "PA System" approach. If you see a deer on the side of the road, grab your mic and yell at it "FREEZE!!
