Competition Pistol - Need Suggestions

Post by CrackerKorean »

The wife and I have been doing practical pistol at the local gun club and shes been using the gun that will eventually be her carry gun. Its a single stack 9mm so so has to do more mag changes which slow her down.

Currently they do not break up the shooters in different categories so people with unlimited guns run with those that use factory guns as well.

She wants to get a double stack 9mm that's full sized for a better sight radius compared to her P239. I was thinking something along the lines of a P226 but my worry with that is the grip my be too large for her. Then I thought about something like an HK USP or HK P30 but they are spendy.

Do you guys have any other suggestions for things she might look at? Something else that would be nice would be an aftermarket for things like magwells and compensators if the need ever arises.

BTW shes not a fan of glocks.

M&P series. Grip is as small as I've seen in a double stack with the small grip insert. The M&P has become a popular model for IDPA and USPSA production division competition and thus has pretty good after market support from multiple vendors.

CZ-75b, $525. Double stack, 16 rounds, I got a Safariland Kydex holster for it, shot it at a 3-Gun match, works great, reliable, decent sights.

I thought about the CZ as well. I love the feel of it but never shot one my self. My issue with that is the grip being too large for my wife.

Initially she likes the look of the M&P but wants to handle one to see how it fits.

You guys have an opinion on the FN FNX-9?

Sorry, I've no experience and know very little about FN's pistols. I don't even recall seeing any in the pistol competitions I've been to during the last year or so.

I don't see any on this list from last year's IDPA championship equipment survey either:

FN is sponsoring a 3-Gun series so a few competitors run their pistols. I don't have huge hands, I have big palms and stubby fingers. The CZ and Ruger SR9 are pretty skinny grip wise. Have you taken your wife to Sharpshooters? I believe they have a bunch of 9mm pistols for rent, which is what I would suggest doing before buying.

Here's the best advice of all: let her figure it out. Don't try to insert your expert knowledge. Send her to a well stocked gun shop, and let nature take its course with what she likes the feel of in her hands. That's what I did, and she's never looked back with her choice.
