I was hoping someone may be able to identify a Smith and Wesson revolver that a friend of mine owns. His great grandfather acquired it. My friend brought it to one of our shooting events recently, and allowed me to shoot a few rounds. I questioned him on the model, but he and his father knew nothing about the gun, other than it's markings. I was hoping that one of you may be able to tell them something about this gun. The right side of the barrell says "38 S. & W. SPECIAL CTG", and the serial number is, 264598.
There are a few more photos. I hope my attachments were done correctly. This is my first posting. Any and all information would be appreciated very much.

Help Identify a S&W Revolver
Re: Help Identify a S&W Revolver
Looks like a K frame. Unless my perceptions are off, anyway. So it would most likely be a .38 Hand Ejector or Military & Police. The serial number puts it into the late teens/early twenties, if my call on the type is correct.
Re: Help Identify a S&W Revolver
It could be a victory gun alot of them were in that caliber.

You (or your friend) can request a letter of authenticity for that specific gun from Smith & Wesson. It costs $50, but the letter received back includes specific info on when the gun was manufactured, where it was shipped to from the factory, and other info about that particular model of gun.
I did this for a friend a few years ago. It was an old nickel plated revolver that someone had done some homegrown scrollwork to. It belonged to his grandfather or great grandfather. He had all sorts of stories about the gun that had been passed down. Some of the stories were kinda debunked, based on the letter received back. Very interesting, though, and worth it to my friend.

Re: Help Identify a S&W Revolver
Thanks for all the helpful inputs, especially from 'newdovo'. I believe my friend and his family would be willing to pay for the letter of authenticity from Smith & Wesson. I know he would like to no more about the gun his great grandfather acquired.

Wrong finish and serial number for a Victory gun, plus they had lanyard rings which this one does not have provision for.bk1330 wrote:It could be a victory gun alot of them were in that caliber.
Re: Help Identify a S&W Revolver
Diomed your right I didn't even pay attention to the lanyard not being there. As far as finish goes I have seen several victory guns that have been refinished. So you can't always tell by finish. I was not sure about victory serial numbers.
