INTRODUCING "SARAH"

Post by Tusker »

I know I don't get by here much, but I hope that will change. Unknown here, but I lost my last, of three German Shorthair Pointers almost two years ago. At the time, I said 'never again', well, being an old guy, 67 yesterday, I decided life was too short to be without a good dog so I started looking. Here is what I found. Not the best photo, but the most current. 5 weeks old. PLEASE, if you have any interest, stop Sarah's page on my little web site for a look at earlier photos. I requested these from the breeder and she was glad to do it. :)

Here is a quick photo at five weeks- to me the look says 'TAKE ME HOME' :D
Just a couple more weeks now. :)

I was recently re-introduced to the love of dogs. Such sweet, caring creatures. More people should behave like dogs. Except for the piddling on the carpet.

HOMECOMING~
Well, Sarah said her goodbyes and arrived in Winchester in fine shape. It was a fairly quite ride home and Sarah proved herself to be a good rider. This is a good thing because we do a lot of it. After a long day, she is now resting asleep in her upstairs kennel. She sure is smart. She already knows to go to the back door when I say 'outside' :), she also knows what 'NO' & 'COME' means, although she doesn't listen every time. :) I have worked with a few pups and my first impression is this is one smart pup. She watches every move I make and one of the tests I gave her in the back yard she passed with flying colors. I waited until she was off a few feet exploring and I just walked away. She came right away, and even returned a soft ball two or three time that I threw for her. A lot of lessons for one day. No wonder she is tired. It is going to be a real pleasure working with her as we get to know each other. :first:
These photos make her look a lot bigger than she really is.

Even pups need a break from training. Sarah is 9 weeks old now and doing quite well in all her lessons. I couldn't really ask any more of her at this time. She has already pointed her first Grouse wings as well. :)

Jake, I guess there are as many choices here as there are people looking. Everyone has their own ideas. I had never trained a dog when I got my first one Molly. The guy threw in an old copy of the NAVHDA book by WINTERHELT & BAILEY, the one he started with. Newer reprints are available. I picked up,Game Dog' & 'Gun Dog' by WOLTERS and they have all stood by me well. They are I believe both on DVD's now. I made the mistake at first of not letting them just be puppies for awhile, no toys etc., but haven't made that mistake with Sarah. Repetition & patience is the name of the game, and plenty of it. Training a dog will teach you a LOT about yourself. I picked GSP because I fell in love with them the first time I saw one. I had my Molly 3 days later. :) It can get really hot around here and a long haired dog would suffer. GSP are about as low maintenance as you can get, if that means anything. Don't know where you live, but the shots,ie: Lyme, etc. are a must. I never got a dog until I retired, and could spend enough time with her. The first week or so after coming home is ALL important for bonding- it will last a life time. I never considered having some one else train my dogs, but it IS done. Personal choice on that one. I am glad the digital cameras came along, and I keep a daily log, the first one by hand, (no computer) in those days, Sarah's log I am keeping in "WORD" and have PLENTY of CD's I can put photos on. They grow up fast. I had everything ready I could think of before bringing Sarah home, including her food- I chose 'Taste Of The Wild', after much research, both on this forum and elsewhere. Keep plenty of stuff for the pup to chew on, Nyle bones and Kong's. I have seen people give them old shoes or baseball gloves then wonder why they chewed up new ones. :hysterical: Like a pup will know the difference?? Yeah right. It is a big commitment, but worth it. There isPLENTY of information just on this forum, from guys who know a ton more than I do. You just have to sort it all out and decide for yourself what will work for you. A well trained dog will be a joy you will be proud of and happier with. I don't know where you live, but feel free to PM me anytime. :)

I saw a chewy remote control dog toy the other day and wondered who in there right mind would by that for their dog. Thanks for the book suggestions I'll check them out.

Head up, tail up, Sarah is proud to be doing her job. Wish the same could be said of some of the people I run into these days. At 10 weeks old today, Sarah is taking to her lessons like she was born to it- and so she was. Todays lessons were sit & stay. It took one try to show her what I wanted. No amount of tugging on the long leash would make her move until I said come and blew one of her whistles. A beginning. :P Sorry for the bad lighting here.

Don't forget to teach her gun safety too, or you might end up like this poor chap.
