Its not unique to the West, Japans metrosexuals are known for some really out there stuff.

I suspect this is whole thing is a mating strategy; many animal species have males that will impersonate females; either via coloration, patterns, or pheromones.

This has two advantages; they do not have to directly compete with often larger males, and they can usually get close enough to a female to pounce without her running away or fighting them off.

Dude, wear a big Sgian-dubh in the kilt hose, and no one will make any comments. Myself, I want to don the outfit just so I can wear a knife in my sock... and dare anyone to comment. Heck, I'd probably get a garter holster to carry my CC gun. But don't let the skirt blow up!
