Added to my 1911 collection- The Granddaddy of 'em all!

Amazingly good condition for a 93-year-old pistol, I think.

Very nice. How much did that set you back? Picking one of them up is in my long term plans too.

Now you just have to tack down all the right parts.

I "deal" in 1911 parts, I may have what you need to put it back with correct parts.

That pistol looks in pretty good shape. Did it come with a story? It looks like it has WW II bakelite grips and was parkerized, probably at the same time it went through a depot for refurbishing.
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

That's pretty much what I thought. I knew the grips weren't original because no double diamonds, but I wasn't sure they were part of a depot refurb. But they do seem to be bakelite. It's good to hear that from someone with more expertise, though. No story. It was in that last huge batch of 1911s made in 1918. Any suggestions?

Good to know. I've got a pretty good collection of "new" 1911s, but I don't really feel like I know enough about the vintage 1911s. Any suggestions?

I have a suggestion... Shoot something with it! Go to the gun show and buy a few Nazi insignia and use them for target practice. Will make that old 1911 feel like a kid again!

I guess that firearm would be the "Cougar" of your collection? Got a few miles on her, still looks dandy and has a LOT of experience.

Reckon so. And I admire your perspective on it, too.

If you can show me a picture of the other side I can tell you a bit more about it.

From the pic the grips are wrong, like already stated but the hammer also appears to be a WWII replacment, profile looks like a remington rand type 2 but its hard to tell from that pic for sure. You need a colt type 3 hammer, a long wide spur with a rounded rear edge.

The slide stop and safety should have a undercut if they are correct, the grip safety is correct.

I have a pair of late double diamond colts laying around here somewhere but I havent seen them in months.
