So, If I am upstairs, do I have to jump out a window and risk harming myself severely before I shoot someone in my house coming upstairs or already up there with me?
If it is dark, I would not know for sure if the guy is armed? Can one assume it since the guy is in your house?
If I'm downstairs, I would try to leave the house first, but upstairs is a different situation...
Yes, the use of deadly force must be understood, I think I'll do some research on it.

ps I just ordered a Springfield XDM 9mm, should have it in a few weeks.
