The area’s first indoor shooting range planned for Campbell County was approved Monday by supervisors.

The range, owned by David Warden Builder LLC, would be located near the intersection of Waterlick Road and Sunburst Road, in the Timberlake area, Designs call for 10 indoor bays with 8-inch thick, steel reinforced concrete walls, said Amy Seipp, engineering director of Acres of Virginia, Inc.

No one spoke against the proposal during the public hearing and one Rustburg resident spoke in favor.

Seipp told the board that she has been contacted by area law enforcement officials and hunters, expressing their excitement that an indoor shooting range would be coming to the community.

Sunburst district supervisor Steven Shockley said the range, if built to National Rifle Association standards, would provide no safety risk and would be a major asset to the community. “As a firearms instructor, having raised children who are firearms enthusiasts and a wife who wants to learn, but no place to go and safely shoot, I think this is a needed venture in the county.”

In other news:

- Supervisors approved rezoning three acres from business limited to business general on Wards Road, just north of Yellow Branch. The property will be used for a retail business selling portable storage sheds.

- Supervisors approved a new special use permit for the Cunningham Brothers automobile graveyard, which already exists on Wards Road. The permit was needed because the business has expanded on another parcel.

- Supervisors also approved a slate of minor code changes. The bulk of changes were state mandated, but one locally inspired change was to revert the noise ordinance back to using a sound meter rather than discretion. The change was in response to a recent court ruling.
