Hello,
I have a Mossberg 590a1 that I love! It does kick like a mule though… even with reduced loads for HD. In looking at reducing recoil and muzzle flip, it seems the most common modifications are lengthening the barrel forcing cone and getting barrel ports.
Does anybody have any experience with these mods? There are many shops that provide this service, including VangComp… Just curious about real work results.

Re: Shotgun barrel mods
Correct me if I am wrong. I believe the Mossberg 590A1 has synthetic stocks (at least the ones I worked on in the Armorers course were). That with the aluminum receiver could easily be the cause. BTW my police force uses the Mossberg 500 with the synthetic stocks. The receivers for both are aluminum. You may be able to find a heavier wooden stock or a magazine extension to add a little weight to it. BTW the stocks for the 500 series will fit the 590 series.

Have you tried the Limbsaver or kickeez recoil reducing pads? I have them on my shotguns and they make a world of difference.

Re: Shotgun barrel mods
How about a recoil pad? Also occurs to me that about every shotgun I ever took the buttplate off of had a fair-sized hole a little bigger than the diameter of the head of the bolt that holds the stock onto the receiver bored up into the stock. I wonder if it would work to take off the buttplate and pour that hole full of lead shot, then replace the buttplate. Might rattle a little, but it would certainly add mass.

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.

What Dorm said, about weighting the stock; I was going to say the same thing, and I'll add that a cotton ball or two may help with any rattle.
