JD, you know some people just like to say the opposite of the crowd because they like a good debate. LOL
Truth is, as many people before me have stated, the best gun for self defense is the one you have. There is no "perfect" for every person, every occasion, every time. That is why there are so many variates.
My understanding is the 10mm is, with a full load, almost equal to the .41 magnum, but the recoil is beyond the capacity of many shooters to control. At 1300 fps muzzle velocity and retaining more kinetic energy by some accounts than the .45ACP has at the muzzle, I don't suppose anyone could credibly argue that the 100mm is a more powerful round than the .45ACP. But retained energy at 100 yards is hardly relevant for a pistol shot (at least in the hands of 999 out of a thousand shooters) because most of us can't hit anything at 100 yards with a pistol. And it all takes you back to the same old saw: it doesn't matter how much knockdown power your round has if you missed. The 10mm, as I understand it, just had too much recoil for most folks to field it accurately. Having never shot one, I hasten to add that I do not know from personal experience.
So, you get a choice between:
.45 ACP at .45 inches in diameter and roughly 900-1,200fps (830 for US Army ball ammo)
.40 S&W at .40 inches in diameter and roughly 1,000-1,200fps
9mm at .354 inches in diameter and roughly 1,200-1,300fps
10mm at .408 inches in diameter and roughly 1,200-1,300fps
It all depends on what your wrists can handle, as I see it. I doubt there's much practical difference between the .40 S&W, the 10mm and the .45ACP at typical handgun range (conceding that the 10mm probably has more energy if you can control it). But it is hard for me to believe, assuming the same projectile technology in all of the calibers, that the 9mm isn't clearly the weak sister in that bunch.

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.
I shoot a Glock 20 in 10MM and it is now my EDC gun. I traded my Glock 30 in .45 for it because I wanted more rounds and more kinetic energy and penetration than my .45 would give me. I love my .45 but I just felt that I wanted every last possible advantage possible if I ever had to use my gun in a deadly force situation. That's just my reason, I see no fault with the 9MM or the .45 at all but with the ammo I use I get 1485 fps at the muzzle and 671 lbs of energy delivered into a target. I have to practice a lot to continually get better with recoil management and to improve my shot split times but I am accurate with this ammo and I know it will go through just about any barrier I might ever need to shoot through and still deliver the terminal ballistics I need. I don't say one is better than the other, I just think one is better for me. Every person has to choose what they shoot accurately and still delivers the package they need as far as concealability, rounds carried and terminal ballistics. I have seen what my ammo does to tissue in the form of a white tail deer and while it isn't a human it is better than gelatin and the damage is impressive.
