SHTF doesn’t care

Can't remember what site I found this on, but we're always talking "Gear", and SHTF ain't about "gear":

SHTF doesn’t care about inclement weather – snow, hail, tornadoes and hurricanes all just add to the party atmosphere for SHTF.

SHTF doesn’t care that you sprained your ankle, broke your leg or are otherwise less than ambulatory. If you have to bug out without a vehicle, you have to bug out, regardless of your injury status.

SHTF doesn’t care that you decided to start prepping after the trip to Disneyworld (because that trip is expensive!!!!)

SHTF doesn’t care that you are on a boat in the middle of the ocean, regardless of what you paid for the luxury cruise. (Check out recent ill-fated Carnival Cruise of the Triumph if you don’t believe me!)

SHTF doesn’t care that you had planned to get your vehicle repaired. You have to evacuate regardless of the leak from the oil pan, the condition of the brakes and the funny noise in the transmission.

SHTF doesn’t care that the entire family is ill with the stomach flu. The entire family will just have to pause to throw up while bugging out.

SHTF doesn’t care that you need new hiking boots and that you just haven’t had time to get to the store and buy them.

SHTF doesn’t care that you planned to buy some bulk foods with your next paycheck.

SHTF doesn’t care that you always use electronic banking. If the ATMS are down and you have no cash, you cannot buy anything.

SHTF doesn’t care that you used all your ammo at the range and Wal-Mart has been out for the past month.

SHTF doesn’t care that the grocery store is closed because of a power outage and you only have a can of peas and some saltine crackers in the house.

SHTF doesn’t care that you are wearing high heels when your car plummets to the bottom of a ravine – you still have to climb out.

SHTF doesn’t care that the pharmacies are closed because of a pandemic and that you have no OTC or herbal medicines at home – if you catch the virus, you will suffer through it without medicine to treat it. And so will your kids.

SHTF doesn’t care that your truck is almost out of gas and the local gas stations have closed because of the disaster. If you have to bug out, you may end up walking instead of driving.

SHTF doesn’t care that you are depressed because you just broke up with your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend. S happens when S happens.

SHTF doesn’t care that you have made a rock solid plan to get in shape - as soon as the weather warms up.

SHTF doesn’t care that you are visiting your in-laws, the most unprepared people on the planet.

SHTF doesn’t care that you had planned to get the propane tank refilled and now the propane trucks aren’t running.

SHTF doesn’t care that your wood is not dry.

SHTF doesn’t care that you have 300 pounds of beans and rice but failed to plan on a way to cook them.

SHTF doesn’t care that you don’t know how to cook over an open fire without inflicting 2nd degree burns on yourself.

SHTF doesn’t care if you have only a week’s supply of toilet paper – if the crisis lasts longer than a week, things will be progressively less pleasant regardless of your intention to purchase more Charmin.

SHTF doesn’t care you planned to reinforce your door frame and install a metal security door – if thugs arrive to invade your home, your hollow core door will serve as a minor inconvenience instead of a deterrent.

SHTF doesn’t care if you believe the fecal matter is headed towards the oscillating device or whether you think it’s a conspiracy theory.

Whatever your excuse may be, you may rest assured, it could easily be on this list... And SHTF won’t care about that either.

That is a good read , I made the old lady read it and see says she is gonna get more envolved with help out and being ready for a SHTF situation. That being said I'm gulty of a few on the list so I need to tighten up.

Meh, my $4,000 AR15 will take care of me...now how to bullets fit in this thing? Strange, it doesn't seem to like loose bullets dumped in the buffer tube.

I think in one way or the other Taz we're all guilty of that. Myself its the bulk food buying - I'm in limbo right now and about to move to VA in 2 months (thank you JEEZUZ) and have put it off because I don't want my 3 month rations getting ruined and getting to VA 2 months after I arrive.

It funny reading this because this recently came up. I had some friends on a car forum asking about emergency readiness. They just had not clue about how to deal with a real issue of their neighborhood being a battleground. So, I wrote up a brief list of "stuff to think about" for them.

I was a volunteer Assistant Emergency Coordinator for PWC for almost 10 years. The two biggest screw-ups I saw my staff make was not enough food and water, and way too much food and water. LOL

I could probably retire off of writing a book about my experiences from the years of training and seeing what worked and what didn't. Even with what seemed like unlimited funding and support from the government... survival skills... real survival skills, preparation and practice were needed just to keep our guys alive and functioning for a few days or a week while being completely self reliant.

My team participated in three major multi-jurisdiction, multi-agency disaster drills in 9 years. It was interesting to see just how busted out some of the guys were, including myself, at the end of a 2 or 3 day drill or after a week long competition in the mountains.

SHTF... truckers are screwed. It's virtually impossible to keep even a months worth of food on the truck. We just got stuck in Wyoming for 2 days on account of a light load and heavy winds, and we were on the tail end of our grocery cycle. Fortunately, the cupboards weren't completely bare, and we weren't stuck far from civilization, but I can't fathom what it would be like with a good stock and a real situation.

I would likely have to rely on my ability to fix broken stuff to barter service for goods just to get home.

Freeze-dried foods in buckets don't take up much room provided that they are in small portion servings. But water storage is critical as well as the ability to heat it.

If you have a large enough inverter in your truck you should be able to heat water using a hot plate or similar device.

There is a small burner that runs off diesel fuel, if I can just find it on the web. Cabelas, maybe?

Check out some backpacking/mountaineering stoves.

All fuel: http://www.opticsplanet.com/primus-omni ... ottle.html
That's one of the best, but not cheap. Burns near any liquid fuel and does so very efficiently due to the pressurized fuel bottle/pump.

You can also go old school and burn wood and this is a fantastic product! Won't work as fast as the pressurized fuel stove, but wood is easy to find. Only downside is it that you must have water in it to use it, even if you're just putting a pot on top, to avoid warping.

The funny thing?

It's not just gear, it's a mental thing.

When you go camping often, you're relying on what's on your back, and the tools you pack... it's a learning experience, and I can tell you this... You learn to adapt FAST!

Running water, a toilet, and a dry place to sleep? Like heaven. Every day!

I started to feel it increasingly that we are coming to the breaking point.

Yup! And when you're hoofin 100 miles in seven days w/ everything on your back, you learn just how little a feller needs to get along.

ABSOLUTELY!

All that fancy gear equals to "pain".

I follow this adage: When I set up camp? The only things that should be in my pack are empty nylon storage sacks, and my MOLLE packs for first aid, and basic tools.

Anyone ever hike in and out of the Grand Canyon on the North Rim? It's amazing to see all the high-dollar stuff tossed on the side of the trails because they know if they don't making it out by sunset, they might not live through it because they'll freeze to death.

The appeal is that such a tax, if it is implemented before avoidance is possible and there is a belief that it will never be repeated, does not distort behavior (and may be seen by some as fair).

I guess all thieves make plans to not get caught!

I have remembered Kyle Bass: "We're going to kill the dollar". To me, it looks intentional.

Tomorrow is food shopping day.
