Albemarle County working on "Gun Law" training course

An increase in concealed weapons permit applications in Albemarle County has inspired the county’s sheriff and commonwealth’s attorney to create a training course on gun law.

Sheriff J.E. “Chip” Harding said 339 people applied for the permits in the first half of 2009. Between 2005 and 2008, the average number of people to apply during the first six months of the year was 149.

The reason behind the jump isn’t clear. However, communities in North Dakota, Texas, Michigan and other states recently have reported increases in permit applications, as well.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford said the 30-minute law course would cover where someone can carry a concealed weapon and answer questions about guns and the law.

The Sheriff’s Office already offers a FIRST Steps Course, an National Rifle Association course that meets Virginia’s training requirements. To sign up for either course, call the Sheriff’s Office at 972-4001 or send an e-mail using the form at the office Web site, http://albemarleso.org/Ncontact.html.

Just talked to the Sheriff and the new "course" is to be a 30 minute talk by the SO that is not a part of the NRA First Steps course but instead is an additional "presentation" given at the end of the FIRST Steps course. It is intended for Albemarle County residents but I was told they MAY try and fit those in other jurisdictions in filling the available slots with Albemarle County residents first and using the rest as "filler". I asked to be notified when the next course is offered and to attend if at all possible.

The Legal part of the class.. will be taught by one of the Commonwealth Attorneys will start at 9:00 AM. The classroom will follow at around 9:30.
