Saw a rifle yesterday on consignment, a Savage bolt gun, heavy barrel, synthetic stock, no sights, 300 WinMag, set up for a lefty. I'm right handed. $500. Good deal? The only reason I'm even remotely interested in it is I want to try out long range shooting, and since I'm prone, the left hand bolt actually works for me. Should I get it? I doubt it will be there when I go back, but am asking the question anyway. What say you, members of the forum?

When you say "setup for a lefty" do you mean bolt handle on the left side? If that's the case and your right handed I wouldn't get it.

Hell, I'd sell you my right handed savage 30.06 with scope and 200 rounds of 30.06 for that much.

Yes, bolt handle on the left side. When you're shooting prone with bipod or other rest, you can keep you cheek weld and right hand on the trigger while you work the bolt with the left hand. Actually works out well that way.

I've got a Bushmaster BA50 (.50BMG) that has a left-handed bolt. Works just fine.

Savage makes some decent, low cost, long range rifles. It really depends on the model though. You can get a lefty to work, but generally it's suboptimal (otherwise we'd all be doing it and it would be the norm).

It really depends on the model, and the features like the trigger. Many of the standard profile barreled Model 10's can be had for $400 new with the Accu Trigger and a basic scope, or $300 or so used. So if it's just one of those with a heavy barrel, it's probably not too far off, but may be a little high. If it's the older model 10 without the accu trigger with a heavy barrel it's way too high imo, but they also have other model Savages that it may be a smoking deal on. Just depends on what exactly it is.

I bought a left-hand Savage M10 with the heavy barrel a few years ago (pre-Accu-trigger) as a groundhog gun. I bought it because it had a good reputation for accuracy and longevity and I wanted it to be MY rifle (being LH) (and the price was right). I put a Timney trigger in it, set it once to around 2.5 lbs, and haven't fooled with it since.
It is a tad heavy to be carrying around the fields, but it is a joy to shoot (misses are my fault, not the rifle's) and I need the exercise. A larger caliber would probably benefit from the recoil-absorbing weight, but the .223 recoil is not an issue. I don't shoot enough at one time to worry about heat dissipation.
Did I need a LH action for the relatively few shots that I typically take? - no, the groundhogs rarely attack. Did I especially need the heavy barrel for stability? - probably not.
Do I like the rifle -yes, I do!
