Hello everyone. I am active duty Navy and fairly new to the state. I have been getting acquainted with local and state law for both open and concealed carry (already got my CCW for VA). Aside from the normal restrictions, federal areas, posted no gun areas and the like, what iv got so far is - cant have anything larger than a 20 round mag in the city, and restaurant's / bars NO consumption of alcohol and your weapon has to be in the open. While out and about my choice for open carry is the Springfield 1911 9mm with an 8 round capacity. As I'm sure you know laws are subject to change without notification. So if there is anything you think I might be missing or should know please let me know, it will be most sincerely appreciated. I am more afraid of unknowingly breaking the law than I am of being attacked (and that is something which I think is F@#*ED-UP)

A couple minor corrections..... In a handgun you can have as many rounds as you want as long as you have a CHP . In a bar situation...If you OPEN CARRY you CAN consume...If you CONCEAL carry YOU CANNOT/ DO NOT consume...

Welcome aboard Jade. Thanks for your service!
To elaborate a little on what VBshooter said - the law regarding restaurants that serve alcohol is that you can carry concealed, but cannot drink. If you carry openly, you can have a drink, but it's not a wise thing to do.
Here's the code section that covers the alcohol/concealed issue. Read the entire code section here:

Virginia Code 18.2-308.J3 wrote:
J3. No person who carries a concealed handgun onto the premises of any restaurant or club as defined in 4.1-100 for which a license to sell and serve alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption has been granted by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board under Title 4.1 of the Code of Virginia may consume an alcoholic beverage while on the premises. A person who carries a concealed handgun onto the premises of such a restaurant or club and consumes alcoholic beverages is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor. However, nothing in this subsection shall apply to a federal, state, or local law-enforcement officer.

Did I read that correctly?, we CAN carry into an establishment concealed as long as we don't consume alcohol?

You read it correctly. You can consume in you are open carrying, but you cannot become intoxicated.
If can legally carry concealed, then you're good to go.
