I am moving to Virginia in Sept from MI and I already own two handguns and several rifles. Do I need to register my handguns? If so, how do I go about doing that?

No, no registration here, just show up.
Oh do be a aware we have a one gun a month law here, so you should be prepared to purchase one a month.... its the law you know.

Unless you have a CHP, then you are required to purchase more than one per month

Why would you bring such dangerous weapons to our peaceful state? When you get here, you should dispose of them IMMEDIATELY. Did I mention I offer weapon disposal services free of charge?

Looks like you're already receiving a pretty good Virginia welcome!

The only thing I don't like is the one Pistol a month law. Though I plan to get my CHP.

It's a good thing the VA CHP is very easy to get.

True, so the CHP is the way to go.

so, how'd the move go?
When I saw the title of the thread, I thought, "great!". (Usually people complain about folks taking guns out of Virginia, not in. )

Work has been real hectic lately, I would have replied sooner. The move went well, like this state a whole lot more than Michigan. I can open carry here in Fredericksburg without having the whole Police Force harass and threaten me.

Welcome to the 'burg. I open carry sometimes too but keep in mind that this is a college town and tends to be a little liberal. If you do it often enough someone will say something. I recommend the CHP because no one really needs to know you have it until they need to know.

I was assured by Capt. Rick Pennock from the Fredericksburg Police Dept that it was legal and that they only enforce the state law on Open Carry. Should I still be worried? I know its not as bad as Fairfax here though.

there's no va state law to enforce on open carry, which is exactly why it's legal for non-proscribed persons.

I wasn't talking about the police. Neither the Fredericksburg nor the Spostylvania police have ever given me any trouble. I was referring to people that live in town. Some ask questions but some just seem to be offended by the sight of a gun. If I have been out in the woods and have one of them on I won't take it off to please someone else but if I am just going to run some errands I carry concealed.

I think I freaked out the maintenance guy that works for the complex I live in. What is weird is most people don't even look at my firearm or react and some people seem to look freaked out, and don't even know that the law does not prohibit me from open carrying my Pistol.
