New Member Introduction - Getting Back into Shooting

Hi everyone. I just wanted to quickly introduce myself. I'm a 31 year old Fairfax resident and a once active shooter. Since getting married and having my first son I've completely fallen off the shooting horse and would like to get back on.

I wanted to pick y'alls collective brain and see what I've been missing in the area. I plan to attend more gun shows at Dullas but wanted to possibly get involved in IDPA and get my carry permit. Any tips on getting started with either? I'm mainly interested in taking classes first and then maybe getting into IDPA. (although I'd probably want to pick up a more carriable handgun since I currently only own a full sized Browning).

Any other shooting sports or activities I should look for in NoVA? I've always wanted to try Trap at Bull Run but could never muster up the courage to go by myself.

I live about a mile from the NRA HQ and Shooting range so I'd most likely go there, but was wondering if there were any new or old ranges near by that I should check out. When I shot more regularly (and lived in Springfield), I shot at Shooters Paradise in Woodbridge.

Thanks for all your help!

Welcome! :welcome:

2nd Sunday of each month, bowling pin shoots at Fairfax Rod & Gun in Manassas.

It's not IDPA, but it's a good time! I'm sure others will know more about IDPA.

We do the training classes for the carry permits at the Nation's Gun Show in Chantilly. We also do the class every month here in Ashland.

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up!

Also are the scores listed on that link you provided a time in seconds? As in the #1 guy took down 6 pins and 6 plates in 10 seconds?!

Yep, that'd be seconds. Last month they started adding two runs together... 6 pins @ 10yds, stop the clock, reload, then 6 plates @ 15 yds. Don't worry though, it's all about having fun. First time through, go slow, take aim at each one... don't rush it. Centerfire pistol, rimfire pistol, and new for Aug .22LR rifle category!
