Hey guys!


What is a good centerfire bolt action rifle for under $250 new or used?

or a rimfire bolt action for under $150?

Go for the all-in-one rifle

Good is not a term attributed to rifles in that price range. The savage axis is probably your best bet for a centerfire rifle. Crickets are the only rimfires I am aware of in the $150 range. I would avoid them and just go a little more for a savage/stevens there as well.

Or just get the above as OakRidgeStars suggests. Awesome firepower in a lightweight package.

You may find a Mossberg Maverick rifle in that price range. I cannot speak of the quality. A Savage/Stevens 200 is probably another contender.

Depends on what you mean by "good". You can get a Mosin Nagant M91/30 (7.62x54R) for under $100, and I bought a 1917 Mauser G98 (7.92x57) -- a great shooter -- last November for $200. Some folks don't like these sorts of guns, but you might.

Last I checked Tony Wilcox in Warrenton had some. Nice guy, interesting shop. Lots of old stuff, collectible stuff.

Not really the place to go looking for Glocks' latest offerings, but if you like wood and metal then there is lots of stuff to see there.

The Nation's Gun Show is this weekend -- I would think you'd see them in large numbers there. I went to the SGK show this past weekend in Hampton, and there were plenty of them in a variety of models. They are also available from multiple sources online. If you like to buy from brick-and-mortar storefronts, most of the shops that I frequent in Southside Tidewater usually have at least one or two. Tidewater Military Traders has piles of them. If you've never seen that place and are into historic weaponry, it's worth the trip. BTW, they're having an auction this weekend. You can check it out at http://www.auctionzip.com/cgi-bin/aucti ... id=1200646. If you can't go in person, you can bid online or by phone. I bought an M44 there a few months ago, and it is freakin' awesome!!! (Need a Mosin smiley with a bayonet and gigantic fireball here.)

I wasn't having any success tracking down Mosin Nagant rifles locally either so I ended up ordering a couple from Bud's online and I picked them up in Manassas a week or so ago. The two that I bought are in pretty good shape and they came with bayonets, slings, and a bunch of ammo pouches for 109 before the transfer fee. I'm still waiting for the surplus ammo I ordered from another company to arrive though.

I'd personally look for a used Savage Model 10. If you could find one with the accu trigger even better, but if not I'd still look for one. That or a used Stevens 200 which is the same rifle without the accu trigger basically. Used you should be able to find either for $250 or so. That's for the centerfire.

For a bolt action rimfire, there are lots of good choices. You can buy a cheap Savage Mark II at Walmart for that with a non accu trigger that's a decent rifle. There are so choices from Marlin that are good, and really just several decent choices if you just want a basic no frills rifle. There are even lots more choices if you go used.

I think finding a good centerfire rifle for that price is going to be the hard part and other than the Savage/Stevens, I don't know that you will really be able to find something that's too nice.
