How many guns can a upstanding resident of VA purchase a month legally? Handguns/rifles? Is there a limit?

You can purchase one handgun per month unless you have a concealed handgun permit (CHP), which exempts you from that rule.

I think you can purchase as many long guns as you like.

There are other exemptions to the one-handgun-a-month law in addition to having a VA concealed handgun permit. Trading-in of a handgun at the same time a handgun is purchased and as a part of the same transaction is an example. Others are listed here:

oh - you can also fill out a form and submit to the State Police requesting permission to exceed the one-a-month law. Not sure of the form number or the specific procedure. I would suggest just getting your CHP and not worrying about it.

So can only purchase one handgun in a month or one handgun ever thirty days?

30-day wait period, not per calendar month.... can't go on May 30, then June 5.... gotta wait until June 30.

Applied for CHP yesterday . Literally been in VA for ten days now, clerk said 45 days or less, what is the average wait?

Depends on your location?
Some in as little a week...others 45 days... or more (in some cases).

you can buy as many hand guns as you like, but can only bring one home every 30 days.

Oh, and remember that your dealer gets to fill out a special form if you buy more than 1 gun every 5 days.

Handguns only, of course. You can avoid it by going to more than one dealer.
