In need of some advice...

Post by Proudtobeararms »

I am a concealed permit holder and started carrying about 7 months ago. I currently carry pretty much everywhere I go. I feel that you either carry or you don't, theres no in between with me. I carry an LCP but I really would prefer a larger bullet and a more reliable piece. I take excellent care of my firearms and the Ruger does jam up occassionally. I also bought the baby Glock but I'm a smaller dude and even with the Crossbreed Microtuck its hard for me to conceal. So I am in the market for a very well made 9mm that is not much bulkier or larger than the LCP. I am thinking of going for a Kimber solo carry. Anyone have any feedback? Any thoughts on the Kimber or any other pieces I should look at?

Thanks and hope you all had a nice 4th.

A family member of mine decided the LCP was to small for him so he upped to the LC9 and likes it a lot. I've shot it, the trigger is long but the gun is controllable and fun to shoot, quality's the LCP doesn't have IMO. I have only watched one thing on Solo but it's from a source I trust and watch often.

NP glad to help I'm sure other will as well. BTW if you get a chance you can run down to Dominion shooting range and try it out. They rent a lot of guns there.

I know that you mentioned a 9mm, but have you considered a revolver? .38+p is very close to 9mm. A Smith & Wesson j-frame is very concealable, too. Just a thought.

I like my S&W 380 bodyguard. I rarely body carry (I'm female) but it fits in places that people don't have a clue I have it.
The trigger pull is long & takes some getting used to, but I still like it. I did read a "blip" in a review as a plus for the 380. His point was that the S&W was a double action only. In other words, put the trigger & the hammer drops. FTF - just pull the trigger again.

I have a Walther PPS in 9mm. It is extremely slim and with hides extremely well at any position IWB. I usually carry either appendix or @ 4 o'clock. It comes with different magazine sizes so I carry it with the 6 round mag for the smallest print and carry 2 additional 7 round magazines (but you could go for the 8 round magazines as well).

I used to carry a Sig p239 as well and while that gun is a little thicker and heavier, it is still compact, easy to hide and shoots very well so that is also an option depending on your preference as the Walther PPS built like the glock (trigger safety, no hammer) and the Sig is DA/SA or DAO.

There was some chatter (with pictures) of them not holding up with magnums, but that was around the time they came out. The issues, if there were any, may have been fixed.

I dont care for DA only revolvers. They are decent for carry however the trigger pull on every one I've tried goes on forever...something I would not recommend for someone with weak hands...

I second the recommendation for the Kimber Solo. I have 3 Kimber M1911s that span from the "bottom" of their lineup to the top and all are outstanding pieces - accurate and reliable. I would expect no less for the Solo. I'm not a 9mm kind of guy, but if I ever buy one, it will be a Solo.

Although I don't personally carry revolvers, I usually recommend the Ruger SP101 to those who do. The .357 will shoot either .357 or .38 Special depending on your preference. It's stainless construction is perfect for daily carry, and it's very concealable. It's a bit of a handful with full .357 Magnum loads, but quite accurate and extremely reliable. The SP101 won't break the back, either.

I carry the SP101 when I decide I need more "Oomph" in my concealed carry (IE: dayhikes in parks)

I've shot one rather extensively. They're fine little wheelguns. There are two versions, the .38 Spl +P version and the .357 Magnum version. Given the intended purpose is a lightweight, compact carry piece, I'd suggest the .38 Spl +P version at 13.5oz. The reason is that the .357M version is 4oz heavier (17.5oz), and when you start getting heavier, you might as well start looking at a "real" .357 Magnum like the SP-101.

The LCR is rather comfortable to practice with a couple of boxes of .38 Special. I believe the flex inherent in the polymer part of the frame is what helps out with this. The benefit is that you're more likely to actually practice with the gun, which I believe people should do with their carry pieces regularly. The DA trigger has a very nice pull to it. It's not too heavy, and not too light.

Got a Solo in March. it made two trips to Kimber before being replaced with another. Never fired that but traded it in for an EMP. The Solo had regular FTE with all ammo, peeningon the slide and barrel, the slide would not stay locked back and the magazine fell apart. Finally, the wear on the slide and interior seemed excessive. Never use ammo not on the Kimber list and cleaned it after each use. Likely mine was lemon that QA missed. However, even when it was working , any limp wrist would cause an FTE. Case in point, when my son and i used it he'd get FTEs but not me. Ditto when a range staff tried it. Loved the gun but could never trust it.
