A North Carolina woman pleaded guilty in Virginia Beach Circuit Court this morning to charges related to the drive-by shooting of her son-in-law last year.

Virginia Lester Wheeler, 63, of Vanceboro, N.C., admitted her role in pleading guilty to charges of aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped a conspiracy charge but retained the right to re-file it.

Wheeler was driving along Dock Landing on Dec. 9 when her brother, Carl Hemp Lester, 67, of Roderfield, W.V., allegedly aimed a long rifle out the car’s window and fired eight shots at her son-in-law, who had just pulled into his driveway, according to court records.

Wheeler’s son-in-law survived but suffered loss of vision in one eye and reduced movement in one arm. He and his in-laws did not get along, and Wheeler and Lester did not approve of him, police said.

Wheeler is set to be sentenced Sept. 15. Lester is set for trial Sept. 1 on charges of aggravated malicious wounding, conspiracy, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

I can't help but be surprised by the ages of the two involved. It's not every day you see individuals in their sixties doing a drive-by. Dysfunctional doesn't even begin to describe that family
