Gun sale sting nets 373 weapons, 49 suspects

Federal authorities and the Atlanta Police bought 373 guns from criminals in a sting operation based in a fake storefront in southwest Atlanta.

Undercover agents put out word that the owners of the business were interested in buying guns as well as drugs and stolen goods and ended up with weapons ranging from revolvers and scoped rifles to sawed-off shotguns and assault weapons.

He said Atlanta police seized 1,700 weapons in all of 2010. He said many of the guns bought during the operation were stolen from cars, which he noted are poor places to store a weapon.

Three comments on the above three paragraphs.
1. Criminals, on average, are stupid.
2. I wonder how many of the "assault weapons" were full auto.
3. "Cars are ... poor places to store a weapon." Who'da thunk it!!!!

Yep if you have to store in a car. Buy a "safe" and bolt it down!

The reason I made that third comment was because I also posted this on the OFCC forums. (Ohioians For Concealed Carry)
Ohio just, this week, got restaurant carry signed into law. (The law will go into effect 9/30/11.)
One of the main points for restaurant carry is/was not wishing to leave a firearm in the car when going into a restaurant that serves alcohol. For EXACTLY the reason pointed out in the quoted article.
I have a cable secured, steel clam shell gun safe that I use in my vehicle for when I have to enter a CPZ. (Criminal Protection Zone)
Ohio still has a pot load of them. CPZs that is.

This is a pretty good illustration of how insane the drug war has made things:

Pearce said the operation was shut down in part because six of the suspects were planning to rob some drug dealers of their cocaine. They are charged in federal court with conspiring to “obstruct, delay and affect commerce... by robbery.”

It's a crime to affect criminal commerce. Thanks, SCOTUS.

“This entire operation was innovative, it was exciting but most of all it was effective,” he said.

Innovative? I guess changing the name from "All Thangs Fine" to "Blaze" (really awful coming from ATF) and from a pawn shop to a smoke shop constitutes innovation.

Depending on the neighboorhood where that store was will make it easier to see why they got so much business,... Druggies and other low lifes like money and don;t care how they get it.....Willing to bet a lot of those guns were classic garbage( Sat night specials) that aren;t even safe to fire and completely worthless except to a government sting operations inflated numbers

I moved up to NoVa from that area (well not that neighborhood), they could have put a sign out that said "we buy crack" and arrested just as many and the ATF and the DEA would have had a nice story in the paper. Same old day, different news.

Stolen weapons and "Saturday Night Specials", much to do about nothing, the ATL PD could have done the same if they had the funding. Scum will be scum.
