So is my math wrong, or am I getting screwed?

I sent in my CHP renewal last month, since I thought I'd get in the 90-180 day window for it to date to expiration of the existing permit. The new one showed up today with an expiration date of this month (in 2016). Or put another way:
Current permit expires 9/1/2011.
New permit expires 6/30/2016.

Looking at the calendar, they received the renewal 92 days before expiration - their own receipt says 5/31/2011 - and unless I'm counting calendar days wrong, that seems to put me within the 90-180 day window. While I am annoyed they appear to have screwed me out of two months, they appear to be trying to do the same thing to my mom (she called the clerk about renewing and was told not to send it in early), and that really pisses me off.

Am I right to be bothered by this or am I just off base?

Virginia Code ยง 18.2-308(I) wrote: If the new five-year permit is issued while an existing permit remains valid, the new five-year permit shall become effective upon the expiration date of the existing permit, provided that the application is received by the court at least 90 days but no more than 180 days prior to the expiration of the existing permit.
Seems like your math is right re: 92 days to me. I guess it just depends on how much trouble you want to go through fighting with them to get them to correct the issue.

Current permit expires 9/1/2011.
New permit expires 6/30/2016.

What this means is you can lawfully carry two concealed weapons during the over lapping periods.

NOPE! I had to take a minute, and review the law.

YER GETTING SCREWED! Contact them with the law that states it's suppose to RENEW FROM THE DATE IT ENDS!

I had the same problem when I renewed mine. Sent an email to the clerk referencing the law. When I hadn't heard back in a week and a half sent another email threatning to contact the chief justice's office, and received a call the next day. After some hemming and hawwing they sent a new permit with the right dates.

I heard from Phil van Cleave about this, and he said pretty much what you said, John - pester them until they do right.

I remember that teacup tempest - was anything ever decided about it?

And let me know if they won't fix it - I can get the Circuit Court to fix it.

Following up, I got a call from the clerk of the circuit court (the actual clerk, not a deputy). Long story short, after checking whatever they check, I was right and they were wrong, and I'll be issued a new permit with the correct expiration date. They did ask that I return the misdated one they sent.

So, I guess justice is served and right prevails.

Glad to hear it worked out. They did the same thing to me, but ultimately fixed it.

Gun owners - Educating Virginia's court officers. It's just another service we offer!

Glad you got that taken care of so easily!
