NW VA - Round about Berryville

Greetings,

Bought my first gun, a Glock 27, in 1998 and been shootin' on and off ever since. In September 2010 had a dream come true by being blessed to move out of Alexandria to 5 acres a few miles south of Berryville. My goal is to move toward homesteading and getting as far off grid as possible along the lines of Michael Bunker's book, "Surviving Off Off-Grid". We homeschool our two young daughters and, for the time being, home church as well. We've started gardening and we soon hope to start raising chickens.

In the past, my focus has been on high-capacity semi-automatic carbines. More recently, I became interested in reach-out-and-touch ability, so I bought a Tikka T3 Lite and scoped it. I bought a bipod for it, but don't know how to attach it. Still have yet to shoot it. Most recently, I'm interested in acquiring a utility rifle, a sort of by-the-door or over-the-mantle grab-and-go piece with open sights. Unable to find just what I'm looking for, I'm about to contact a local smith to see what he'll charge to build it. I've signed up for a hunter safety course this July because I fully intend to shoot, kill, and eat Bambi this fall, partially in revenge for eating the leaves off the numerous fruit trees I planted.

While I've been shooting for a little while, I'm still quite ignorant on many topics. I hope to learn from my fellow Virginian shooters here, so I'll be posting some daft questions before too long.

Peace.

Doug, whereabouts do you go to propel lead around our parts? I have five acres, but it's not set up well for shooting.

Taggure, don't ya know? Bambi done growed up. I saw a preview on one of my kids' DVD rentals for a movie about Bambi as the new king of the forest or some such nonsense. I had to sit down with my two daughters (9 and 7) to explain make sure they understand that the Bambi movie is make believe. I like what Ted Nugent said about what deer think about -- what will I eat next and what deer will I be humping (or being humped by) next. There's a reason that God made venison lean, kosher, and quite tasty.

:welcome: From Louisa!

Congrats on the homeschooling and gardening - do you plan on canning and freezing?

For the grabit n go utility rifle - maybe a lever action, perhaps in .357 mag?

How many fruit trees is 'numerous' ? (I've got an orchard in the planning stages myself...)
