Dicks called - Errors on forms...

Ok, last year bought the one shotgun from Dicks, and after I swore I would never do it again.... because it took so damn long.

Once I filled out the forms, the clerk went and entered the stuff for the check. After it came back approved, a supervisor had to verify everything on the forms. Ok, it already came back approved.... AFTER the supervisor checked the forms, a Manager had to verify the forms. The manager pulled out some card template thing and laid it over the forms that show if all info needed was filled in. Ok, that's 2 people that checked the forms AFTER I was approved including the clerk that did the transaction making for a total of 3 people that checked the forms.

A week ago I get a call on my cell while at work.. didn't answer. They left a voicemail. It was Dicks stating that during an audit they discovered an error on one of the forms and that I need to come in to correct it. Yeah ok, I gave you my money, I got my gun (with receipt). No problem for me. I blew it off.

Tonight they call and leave another voicemail.... this time the lady tells me that "in order to avoid any issues with the ATF I need to come in and correct the error." And she even tells me that if I come in they will give me a $10 gift card.... yes folks $10. Hell that will cover the gas maybe.

Ok, question....... what issues can "I" have with the ATF? I don't see how I can have any issue. I gave them my money, they gave me a receipt and my gun. To me, this isn't my problem.... or am I wrong? After 3 people checking the forms, including a supervisor and a manager, how is it my problem there was an error?

Remember, I bought this gun last year September....

They're high. The deals done.

If there is a mistake on a form it's on their side, not with ATF.

Besides, ATF doesn't make mistakes. Just ask them.

My thoughts too. They are just trying to scare me so I will come in. That's why I haven't went. I figured that I paid and got a receipt from them, it is a done deal. Not my problem.

So True... lol

They told me to call them and talk to a manager if I have any questions about the error.... I should call just to mess with them, tell them it isn't my problem. Let's see if I can get them panicking enough to bump that $10 gift card up some. See how high I can get em to go to get me to come in, haha.

Tell them you want $50/hour for your time, plus travel, paid BEFORE you change the document. You also want your attorney to look over what is considered an error too!. Of course they can always come out to your local, at YOUR convenience.

I am sick and tired of businesses pulling this BS. Doctors, Lawyers, Dentist, etc.... If they screw with my time, they get a bill. if they don't pay I take them to small claims court.

People need to stand up for themselves again.

I bought a .22 Crickett for my son about 10 yrs. ago from Walmart - they pulled the same crap a year later... I didn't go in.

Effem. Too bad all three cats were incompetent.

I want to point out that the fine print on a Dicks gift card prohibits using them for ammo or firearms.

If they care that much about doing this right they'd do it right the first time, their problem not yours. Make them drive out to you to fix it if you're that nice.

Wow Jerry, I am assuming you went to the one at Patrick Henry Mall? I've bought a few guns from them with no problems whatsoever.

I agree, the problem is theirs, not yours. I believe that I would do exactly what you said. I would call them and quiz them as to why they feel that it is your problem. I would keep on them until I feel that they have made me an offer that is worth my time and trouble to come in.

As Brian pointed out, the gift cards cannot be used for firearms or ammo, so they would have to make me a pretty sweet deal!

I take it you want your local store to lose their FFL.
And possibly all Dick's stores to decide to not sell any firearms at all.

When you bought your gun the store employees tried to do everything in their power to insure that the BATFE paperwork was filled out EXACTLY the way the BATFE wanted. Note the BATFE has a zero tolerance policy on how the form 4473 is to be filled out.
Granted, the 4473 that you filled out and signed had all the information that was needed for the NICS check to go through without a hitch but that does not mean that it was filled out the way a BATFE auditor wants to see it.
Bear in mind that much of the cr*p that the BATFE auditors are doing was started in the Klinton years specifically to run FFLs out of business.
Questions have to be answered with "yes" or "no" not "Y" or "N", addresses have to have the state name completely spelled out even though there isn't enough room and despite the fact that the zip code identifies a location better than city and state does.
Also what one auditor might allow one year is probably not what the next auditor will let pass.

Don't blame Dick's, blame the government and the BATFE and it's leadership.

If you want the US to be like Mexico with only one licensed gun dealer in the entire country go ahead and make your local FFLs lives as difficult as possible.

From your post I'm sure you think they're begging you to come in and help them out just to harass you because they have nothing better to do.

I will not contest that the BATFE is very anal about how the paperwork is to be filled out. That is very well known. The problem, however, rests with Dicks as they obviously did not train their personnel thoroughly on how the paperwork is to be filled out.

No one here is advocating that Dicks should lose their FFL. However, the Dicks employee that contacted Jerry had no business telling him that he stood to be in trouble with BATFE for their mistake!

Yes it was at the mall location. It was the first gun that I bought there and the last. The process took forever. What really made me mad was the fact that 2 different people had to check the forms after I was already approved. Why not have the manager check the forms as soon as they are filled out??

AlanM wrote:I take it you want your local store to lose their FFL.

I never said that, but again, how is this my problem that they have incompetent employees. They had 3 personnel go over the forms, including a supervisor and the manager. 3 friggin people..... I guess that card template thingy that the manager laid over the form is wrong too, because that is what he used to check the form. It was a yellow card the same size as the form with see through windows in the locations on the form where information needed to be filled out. And next to those see through windows were descriptions of what needed to be in the fields...... So a manager used a cheat sheet and still got it wrong.

AlanM wrote:Don't blame Dick's, blame the government and the BATFE and it's leadership.
See above. I could go on again about 3 people checking the forms (including a supervisor and manager), but I don't feel like typing it all out again when you can just read my paragraph above about the 3 incompetent employees that checked the forms and one was a supervisor, one a manager. Did I mention the part about the cheat sheet the manager used? If not, please see my paragraph above. I guess if you want me to blame the government for making Dicks hire 3 incompetent people (clerk, supervisor, and manager), then I can blame them.... but for now I will just blame Dicks. LOL.

AlanM wrote:If you want the US to be like Mexico with only one licensed gun dealer in the entire country go ahead and make your local FFLs lives as difficult as possible.
All I see here is blah blah blah.
AlanM wrote:From your post I'm sure you think they're begging you to come in and help them out just to harass you because they have nothing better to do.
Not at all, I think they are begging me to come in because they realized 3 of their employees screwed up and now to avoid getting hammered want to try and fix it. I know they have better things to do........ like maybe hire some competent employees.......... or maybe train the already hired employees properly.

+1 Above Yarddog, that's what set me off.

They are the ones who screwed up. Well, then pay Jerry for his time in the screw-up, REAL reimbursement for his valuable time. $10 does not even cover gas, wear and tear, etc on his vehicle.

He paid, he did his part. Dick's screwed up. They come to him give him $50 minimum.

My personal time is valued at $50/ hr minimum. As should Jerry's. If I had to go during work hours, that value goes closer to $100/ hr.

Of course, as I pointed out, it's obviously not possible that the BATFE has changed their requirements in the last year.
Or that the current requirements were available to the store employees at the time of the sale.
Everyone knows that the BATFE gets all their regulation changes out to the FFLs in a timely manner.

My 2 here. This form went through THREE people and no one caught the error. I have to throw the BS flag here. Especially after the background check.

This is a BATF error they should correct it not you. CHARGE THEM FOR YOUR TIME!

50% discount on a gun or case of ammo might be worth your time.

I personally would likely extend them the curiosity and stop by. But it isn't a long drive to any Dick's around here so you situation may be different. I would also expect them to extend a curiosity(giftcard of $20, free ammo, cleaning stuff, ect) to me in return as it is their fault. As far the the comment about you having "issues with the ATF", I wouldn't be surprised with that's what the ATF told them.

If there were issues with ATF I believe they'd already be at tour door to get it fiixed... Possible DICKS is facing some form of fine or worse against their FFL,

A little update:

Ok, after the last phone call, I was going to wait a week and let them worry a little, then give them a call back.

Then over the 4 day July 4th weekend, I forgot about it with all the excitement of the 4th and having fun with my little ones. Yesterday I get home from work, go to the mailbox and in there waiting for me is a little brown piece of paper..... I have a certified letter sitting at the post office. I look up in the corner where it says Sender's Name, and it is from Dicks. LOL. I guess they really want me to come in. I will pick up the letter at lunch and see what they have to say and report back.

Yeah, just tell Eric "Have you seen my chin" Holder that you sold it to a mexican cartel in support of his gun runner initiative...and as a bonus you'll take the purchase value as a tax deduction so it aligns with their strategy of using tax dollars to buy the weapons they send across the border...
