Shooting an "out of the box" ruger

I bought a brand new ruger mark III and shot it without cleaning it first. I think I've learned that is a mistake. Does the manufacturer normally over oil a gun? The ruger jammed several times and I suspect there was too much oil. Would that be a cause for jamming? I am disassembling it and cleaning it right now and finding it really oily.

Yeah, the manufacturer will treat the metal with a protective coating of thick oil to prevent rust and corrosion. It sounds like it will be fine once it's been cleaned and lubed.

Thanks! It's the first "new" gun I have ever purchased.

Ok, so now I have pulled out the bolt pin and there is a big scratch on the pin. I did not abuse it when I was pulling the pin out so I dont think I caused the scratch. Should I have it repaired? I guess it is more prone to rusting there now? It's not a deep scratch. Just seems to have taken off the bluing...

The picture is too dark for me to tell, but it doesn't sound like a problem. As long as it has a light coat of oil, it won't rust. You'll just need to look for signs of wear in that area as you clean it in the future.

That pin is going to wear when you disassemble/assemble the MKIII to clean it. It fits fairly tight too so I wouldn't worry about it much.

Thanks OakRidgeStars and Moccasin. It's clean and ready to go now. I'll try it out next week and see how it goes.

Sweetpea, it's always good policy to clean a new gun of any type before you shoot it.
Ruger makes a fine pistol, I could not see the picture very well, but I think Moccasin is right, a light film of oil on that pin and you won't have a rust problem.

Thanks! Sorry the pic is so dark. My living room doesn't get much light. The white/silver line running straight down the pin is the scratch. I'm learning my lessons as I go along. I appreciate the words of advice!!!

Doesn't hurt to clean it first.

Yup. Read the owners manual. Many recommend that you follow disassembly and cleaning instructions before firing the weapon for the first time. Kimber does.
