Defensive long gun outdoors

For those of you who knew already, forgive the "duh" post. I have lived all around the country and the laws are different everywhere. That being said, I make it a point to know the handgun carry law of wherever I am/going.
For years in other states I've taken a 12G pump filled with the cure for all one's social ills, one ounce of lead at a time. Come to find, that's sorta frowned upon in VA & WV. Fortunately I didn't find out the hard way. Whereas elsewhere it is completely legal to hit the woods/desert with a boomstick, seems here one would become an automatic hunter in the eyes of a game warden. I'm still researching the codes to see if there is any further clarity. The state hunting rules that Walmart hands out are administrative interpretations of legislative intent, so I'm not taking that as gospel just yet.
Anyhoo, I really enjoy getting my family out camping past cell range, and it makes me a little uncomfortable to go pistol-only to silence the Deliverance banjos.
If anyone would like to comment, well, that's kinda why I put this post up! Thanks in advance.
