More Evidence That Mexican Drug Cartel Guns Are Coming From Central America

As we reported last week, evidence is mounting that many of the illegal firearms finding their way to Mexican drug cartels are originating not in the U.S., but rather from surplus military sources in Central America.

This week, an IHS Global Insight Daily Analysis article offered further evidence of the trend.

According to the article, General Douglas Fraser, in testimony before the U.S. Senate, claimed that Mexican drug cartels are sourcing weaponry from military arsenals left over from Central American civil wars and conflicts. Fraser testified that more than 50 percent of military-grade weaponry flowing through the region originated from Central American arsenals, with the total quantity in circulation estimated at between 45 million and 80 million firearms.


The article went on to note that Admiral James Winnefeld, commander of the Northern Command, declared that firearms were coming into Mexico from other parts of Latin America, with certain types of weaponry originating south of Mexico.

As the article points out, the flow of arms from Mexico’s southern border casts significant doubt on the current assertion by Mexican authorities (and some in the Obama administration) that 80-90 percent of illegal firearms making their way into Mexico come from the U.S.

Pfftt...what a silly question. Everybody knows that more than 90% of all illegal weapons (including grenades, rocket launchers, and military grade automatic rifles) are purchased by criminals at American gun stores and easily smuggled across the border...if you read really the WaPo or watched MSNBC you would be a little better informed...

The media wants, along with the Obama Administration, to disarm our population and turn us into subjects.

It stands to reason that they would use the [false] argument that "90% of guns in Mexico are illegally purchased in the US and smuggled to Mexico". This is an attempt to woo the American public into thinking that we, as a country, with out "lax" firearms laws, are doing something to hurt our neighbor to the South. This is a clear attempt to sway public opinion in an effort to move forward with a "Gun control" agenda.

The federal government doesn't care about lying to "We, the People". They just want to pass their agenda at all costs. It sickens me that we have so many untrustworthy people at the highest levels of our government and a national media that blindly reports everything that they say. Well, as long as it's not George Bush, they blindly report.

The ones coming from the U.S. are being allowed by the ATF. The whole deal is crooked.

I think what you're missing is the part of the statement about traceable guns. If the only gun records in the database are from US manufactured weapons, the only guns that can't be blamed directly on the US are those that were sent via the lend-lease-aid programs to foreign nations such as Columbia and Mexico itself. Think about the leftist insurgencies that were supplied with Soviet, Chinese and Warsaw Pact AKs through the ever loving nation of Cuba. Do you think Cuba is going to admit it has ever seen any of those weapons before? 85% of weapons being untraceable, 15% are traceable and most of those are from the US, so that puts it more like 1 in 8 weapons came from the US, what is worse the BATFE had the opportunity to stop a bunch of them and their leadership chose not to.

Maybe we could do like one of the idiot comments I saw over on that gun poll article about VT...put an RFID chip in every gun and bullet...put one in gun owners too...then put up RFID scanners all over the place...presto...instant traceability for all guns and ammo...find a body dead by gun shot wound...no problem...whip out the RFID scanner and you know immediately everything...

Makes about as much sense as a box of rusted hammers...
