Virginia Gun Owners Forum - VGOF

I live in Chesapeake VA (well will be in a month) and I have family and friends in Washington DC that I will be visiting from time to time and I plan on taking my handgun with me while I drive. My plan is to CC until I get to the state line where I will pull over and disarm, locking the gun itself in a case in the trunk, and the ammo separated from the magazine in the glove box. Is this the best way to handle this situation or is there a better way? Thanks for the help.

Do yourself a favor and have your family/friends visit you. If you have to visit DC, leave you firearms home. Federal Protection is not provided to you for Interstate transport, because your destination is DC, where most likely you are not allowed to posses a firearm.

The only way to execute your trip legally is to stop at the DC border, get out of your vehicle, disarm, and leave it on the ground. Then you can get back in your vehicle and drive into DC.

DO NOT go into DC with a firearm, whether loaded, unloaded, locked, unlocked - you will get nailed if you are found in possession. They're crazy up there!

Let's be honest. Not many people are going to pull over and go through all that when they figgure hell I am almost there so I will just leave it where it is. What could possibly happen ? And if something did happen and a Police Officer enforced the law's of D.C. and you were arrested for the possesion then the Cop would be the bad guy or girl.

SgtBill - I am not getting your mind set. Are you trying to get the original poster in trouble and then watch his rights taken away from him?

Thanks for the heads up. So from what I gather it is illegal to own a firearm in DC? My final destination would actually be Silver Springs MD, would this allow me to drive safely through DC to visit my family, give of course if I stop at the line and disarm as I stated before?

You cannot carry a firearm and/or ammunition into the District of Columbia. Period.

If your destination is Maryland, then drive directly from VA to MD and leave your firearm there before traveling into D.C.

It's as simple as that.

uhm, do you have a permit to carry/posses in MD? We dont go to MD or even stop in MD b.c of their tough gun laws. Do yourself a favor and and check MD law first. or contact Kenn Blanchard (Black Man with a Gun) - a gun-toting preacher and gun podcast host re your situation and any questions:

Maryland does not honor any other state Permit/Licenses.

It is illegal to carry any loaded firearm in any vehicle in Maryland.

It appears that WITHOUT you having a MD gun license/permit, you can travel THRU MD (say from VA to PA on I-95 avoiding any part of DC) with your gun BUT BUT BUT - you have to unload and separate ammo from the gun, and store them in the trunk : "during such transportation the firearm is unloaded, neither the firearm nor any ammunition being transported is readily accessible or is directly accessible from the passenger compartment"

That's why we never STOP in MD - just passing THRU

After reading everyones replies and doing a little research I've decided to not take any firearms with me if I travel to MD to see family . It seems like a wise choice.

Not realy true.
As a retired Det. Sergeant I have the right to carry in any state in the country as long as I have my retired I.D. card.

Does the Maryland prohibition apply to all guns, or just pistols?

10-15 years ago, I hauled 8-12 shotguns at a time into Maryland to goose hunt. Piled them into the back of a van/Blazer/Tahoe. Carried them in and out of motel rooms in the open. Also passed through DC that way on the Beltway and off onto Rt 50. occasionally came back into downtown DC to the Smithsonian or various bookstores on the Sunday after the hunt as we came home. Was I an outlaw saved only by my wide-eyed scubbed-cheek innocence?

Outlaw! Thank goodness the statute of limitations has likely expired on those heinous crimes!
