A Mosin-Nagant "sniper" isn't going to be a real long range gun. Sniper of that era really just meant standard rifle with sight. It really depends on what you consider long range, but usually that 500-1000 yards which I would not recommend any Mosin-Nagant for. There are much better choices.

For my second post after the above I was browsing the marketplace and saw a reference to bumper stickers in a thread, so I posted a link to where I had my last one made.

Glad to see the moderators here are very active, but I'm not sure what rule I broke, and I'm sad my above post was also deleted.

Thanks for the info about the Mosin–Nagant, I realize that in VA I'm not going to have much practical use. I should have said it would be a cheap way to practice a higher caliber rifle.

Shooting a larger caliber requires the same skills as a smaller one. Usually there is more recoil/muzzle blast/etc. A 30 cal rifle is very useful in VA. You can hunt with it (deer, bear, and even varmints with the right bullet, but 30cal is about as big as those bullets get), you can target shoot, etc. The right 30 cal/rifle/ammo can easily reach out to 1k yards and beyond.

What are you interested in? Hunting (what), target (what distance...competitive or just for fun), etc.? Want to shoot offhand, prone, bench? What's your approx. budget? There are lots of people who can help you if you provide some more information on what you want to do with it. As a newbie that is probably the hardest part of buying a new gun, translating your desires and perception correctly so that you get the gun which will meet them and not the one you think might work.

Thanks I didn't realize that.
I like the idea of the Mosin–Nagant because it seems buying bulk ammo for it is so cheap.
I understand that as i get better ti wont be the most practical, but I can always buy more guns!

I'm interested in having fun and trying everything from targets to hunting to see what I am interested in.
I have friends who are willing to share their information and expertise in various fields.
My budget for this weekend is around 300-350 and I'm definitely settled on the 270 cal, leaning towards a savage for my first. Due to the cheapness of the Mosin–Nagant I thought it would be a solid second gun that people speak highly of. Within the next few months after I've gained some experience, I'll have more money to invest.

Short term I'm interested in becoming proficient with rifles, and trying to shoot them offhand prone and bench!
Long term I'm interested in building a versatile collection and learning about everything.
