I had a Ruger 45 that got stolen from my house. The police found the gun but, are keeping it as evidence and I won't get it back for a LONG time. I would like to hear from owners on different makers and feedback for purchasing a new one. I am leaning towards a Springfield.

I have a glock 21 which i absolutely love to shoot. If your looking to carry its a little big but for shooting/bedside gun its a really good choice. i have 3 glocks and this this one is the best shooter of them, well balanced and accurate. I put a 3.5lb trigger in and shoot same groups with it then i did with my kimber custom target. Not to mention any double stacked 45 pistol means business

I have to recommend a 1911, yeah it’s big, heavy and only holds seven to eight rounds reasonably, but it’s proven, and if you run out of ammo you can always use it as a hammer… I’m not going to mention the plethora of modifications out there either. It’s not the easiest to work on but where there’s a will there’s a way.

Glock 30 if you plan on carrying it at all. Holds 10 rounds, you can do pretty much anything you want to it and still trust it to fire, recoil is surprisingly low for a 45 and its accurate.

I have to second MikeJMarine... this is 2011, so in honor of John Browning you need to make your next .45 a 1911, buying any other .45 THIS year would be just plain sad, if not actual heresy!!

Love my 1911 Kimber for a big gun, can't go wrong there. But if you want it for carry don't forget the Kahr's. I have a Kahr P45. Super light, super thin, but doesn't feel like it at all when shooting. Great gun. DAO also. Very safe. I can hip holster with a shortsleeve t-shirt and you can't see a thing. Good luck!

I have a Springfield 1911 GI model, and it's the worst performer of the the 8 1911s I own. The sights suck, it jams, and it is less accurate than other 1911s. The best (in my opinion) is probably a Dan Wesson Valor with a Kimber Elite II being a close second. If you want to carry, I've got a Colt Commander that is a little smaller and is an EXCELLENT handgun. The Glock 21 is a little thick in the handle, but holds something like 13 rounds and shoots very well. I also have an H&K HK45C, which is a compact gun. Based on my experience with their shotguns, I expected it to be fast and smooth, but I was very dissapointed with it whjen I shot it. If you are considering a non-custom/customized 1911, my advice is you ought to look at the Colt Commander.

But like Gunderwood done told you, it depends on what you're gonna do with it, and what makes YOUR nipples hard.

Bullet design is critical. A HP 9mm which expands is better than a .45ACP FMJ or HP which doesn't expand. However, if I had to shoot FMJ I'd want the .45 only because they don't make a .46ACP.

They make a .50, Gunderwood. But they call it a ".50 GI" But it's a .45ACP that's a half-inch broad.

I respect all rounds, for ALL rounds have killed someone at some point in history.

I figure if I'm satisfied to hit the target the first and every time with my .45ACP and knock it DOWN when I do), and somebody else wants to buy a newfangled Yoo-Row-Peein' gun that will hold twice as many rounds of some 21st-century exotic bullet and spray them all over the landscape, then as long as neither of us shoots the other we ought to both be happy. Why should I hate a feller because of what he don't know no better than?

For hunting, target shooting, etc. a proprietary/wildcat cartridge is fine, but not for SD/SHTF/War.

Wow, unbelievable thread. A good .45 is a glock model (any of them)
A great .45 is a Kimber (any of them)
The best in my opinion is a Wilson Combat. They are slim, strong and very reliable. They are also very pricey. Might want to wait the three months until the ATF returns your firearm to the state police and then go sign the papers and take your gun home. In the mean time, I hear a rather small individual took a giant with a sling shot? Just thought I'd throw at ya'.
