The first volley? Don't know and really don't care...we already have many laws to keep guns out of criminal hands...

And none of us should be willing to remain passive in the face of violence or resigned to watching helplessly as another rampage unfolds on television.
This caught my eye.

Ah, he must have been talking about the shooting at Fort Hood where soldiers, denied the right to protect themselves and their families, were shot down in cold blood by an Islamic lunatic...

A couple observations...
1) Suddenly we're all family?? Anyone get an invite to dinner?
2) NICS is fine the way it is.
3) Shove the word "sensible" sideways up yur butt.
4) "Sellers who "WANT"to do the right thing??? That is a blatent shot at gun shows and
private sales.
5) Lastly the politicians ever popular total BS fallback line. "for the children." See #2 above and change as necessary!
I personally don;t trust Obama as far as I could throw him,, He waffles more than Clinton or Bush ever did....And at least they never claimed to be kinfolk for some dumbass agenda,

I am with Henry on giving them my weapons that were lost in a boating accident year's ago and any ammo that they get will be fired ammo and they can catch the slugs from.

"Commonsense Gun Control" is an oxymoron.
The thing seemed like more of a call to ban private sales than anything else to me.

"Commonsense gun laws?" Name one politician who has commonsense! Just as "investment" is the new speak for spending "commonsense" is the new speak for gun control!

actual quote:
“That’s why our focus right now should be on sound and effective steps that will actually keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place.”
should be:
“That’s why our focus right now should be on sound and effective steps that will actually keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting elected to office in the first place.”

Commonsense Gun Control has four parts to me:
1. Stable Position
2. Sight Alignment
3. Breath Control
4. Trigger Squeeze
If you actually want to read the President's Op Ed. here it is:

I don't agree with the numbers he quoted, 2000 gun deaths since the Tuscon attack seems awful high to me. No mention of gun shows. What he didn't say, but should have is how many times do we have to be let down by the people who were supposed to do something, but just didn't have the time or the backbone to do the paperwork, like Hasan's superiors, the FBI officials who knew he was in contact with a radical cleric, the Sheriff's office that had multiple run-ins with Jarod Loughner, and Seung-Hui Cho's warning signs at Va Tech. No mention of the fear by those folks of lawsuits by the ACLU or offenses against multi-culturalism.

"Common sense" has always been code for "registration and confiscation". He's signalling his base that he's still a true believer.
Presumably he'll act accordingly once he's been reelected.

I am not surprised but, what I am surprised about is that he took this long to get around to the gun issue. I can't help but wonder if he is just waiting to get elected for his second term and then drop the hammer on all of us.

It's more of an attempt to calm his critics like Brady Bunch that he's not doing enough.. Seems like Ol Mike Bloombergs millions has more clout than a few million gun owners with election time coming.... We'll see more of this theatrics as the 2012 election nears... He'll attempt his ususal assaults and promise the lunatic fringe and entitlement slackers the world if they'll just vote for his skinny ass one more time. We as gun owners need to be sure he does not get that 2nd term....The gloves are off and he just struck the first blow from a blow hard..

"2000 gun death since AZ" is exactly correct. IF you include:
- Gun deaths from criminal activity in all of the Americas.
- Combat deaths in Persia.
- Suicides.
- Ligitimate hunting kills in Hoboken.
- "Biddniss" in Washington D.C., NYC, Chicago, Philly and LA.

The thing about us country boys is that we can instantly recognize and identify BULLcrap. My EEWS is ringin' off the hook. (that stands for EARLY EXCREMENT WARNING SYSTEM)
First, I can’t help but ask the question, with regard to those “futures” we are being “robbed of”, by the alleged 2,000 gun-violence related deaths a day, HOW MANY of them are the result of inner-city and open-border gang-and drug related violence. Cold-blooded though it may seem to some, that leads inexorably to another question: Of what value were those “lost futures”? Other, that is, from the fact that they might be expected to generally vote Democratic (to the extent they bothered to vote at all and to the extent they were citizens).
The next question that anyone who commanded the mental faculties required to be admitted to the ranks of mouth-breathers would ask himself is, if the aim of the President is to prevent those “irresponsible, law-breaking few; the dangerous criminals and fugitives” from getting guns, why do we need more gun control? They are already prohibited.
Even though all this mouth-breathing has me somewhat hyperventilated, I am able to formulate a 2-step suggested approach to evaluating any further gun-control:
(1) Do not impose any restriction on our Second-Amendment rights that you are not willing to impose upon owning and operating a motor vehicle, procreation, voting, voter registration, eligibility for entitlements or any other of the rights protected by any of the first 10 amendments to the Constitution. I really like that last one, because if we aren’t even allowed to mention God or a religion on government property or business, well then they ought not even be TALKING about gun control, right?
(2) If you DO come up with a gun-control proposal that passes the first step, don’t propose it.
