I love my sword, but it ceased to be a primary weapon 350 years ago. Its sharp and looks nice on the mantle, thats about it.

Yup, just make sure it has a shroud, pistol grip, and is detachable from the scabbard...

So knives are the opposite of guns, they ban long ones (in some places) vice short ones like guns. So what is it for swords? Should I get the longest I can find or the ultra shorty?

Just keep in mind that at less than 3', the sword blade tip speed falls below the minimum FBI recommended standard for penetration of gel blocks and can be considered to be ineffective in a self defense situation.
