Someone had a real Tommy gun--a fully-automatic one--at my range and let me fire it if I'd feed it. You bet I jumped on that! Recoil even in full-auto is really nothing to speak of, and the firearm was remarkably controllable. Semi-auto oughta be like firing a .22LR.

With a weapon that weighs around 11 pounds and shoots a pistol cartridge, it ought to be controllable.

... so in THEORY I should probably jump on an original tommy auto in fbi case for a grand if one was THEORETICALLY offered to me? Extra clips but no drum.

Well, hypothetically speaking, if one were offered to me I would realize it was worth 10!!









10 years that is, I am a practical person, I understand the theory that the second amendment should allow me to own a Thompson. I however firmly believe that I don't have the funding nor the time to take on the fight. I also don't have the 10 years in my life to throw away should I lose (I feel the case would not be easily won, if at all). My response at the offer would definitely be no.

If it is registered, absolutely. A registered original 1921 or 1928 Thompson starts at $15k in the market and can climb rapidly from there depending on condition and provenance.

There is a market for unregistered machineguns but I do not participate and cannot guess the amounts involved. It's a risky action since possession of a machinegun that is not registered to you is a federal (and often a state) felony.

how would one go about registering one if it "theoretically" fell from the sky or was "inherited"? On the same note... say somebody had a friend who happened to "find" an original m-16 receiver and other bits while fossil hunting? I honestly am waaaay to cheap to want anything that fires more than one round at a time... but I have a hard time saying no to free stuff

If it is not already registered, there is no way to add a new machine gun to the NFA register. Your only legal option is to turn it into the ATF for destruction. IIRC, the 68' law was the last time amnesty was offered and IMHO it will not ever be offered again. If it is registered as an NFA item, then you have to go through the normal process of getting it transferred to you.

That being said, while I know nothing about it, I surmise that there are lots of such guns which disappear and get buried because most of our grandfathers had no problem given the ATF the bird.
