Leahy Sets Cyber Privacy Agenda

Sen. Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, on Tuesday unveiled an ambitious agenda for changing the country's privacy laws to keep pace with the digital age.

Here is an interesting read especially with the FCC running around overstepping their bounds on the internet and all the "Net Neutrality" BS they are trying to push

The committee also must extend certain parts of the USA PATRIOT Act that are set to expire next month, he said. The three provisions grant the government the ability to use roving wiretaps to trace the communications of suspects; obtain special court orders forcing businesses to turn over evidence; and conduct surveillance on a "lone wolf," somebody not knowingly associated with terrorists.

Ummmm, no they don't. The Patriot Act can just go ahead and lay down and die next month. And good riddance.

So after re reading again and further investigation it is only the 3 provisions listed above that would expire at the end of February. Shucks

Like most of you I can alllllmost remeber teh beginnings of the Webbernets when Al Gore said; "Let there be FTP!" In fact, my first adventure on the 'Net was reading the English course catalog for the University of Tel-Aviv thru a SSH session. From a Government computer. Firewall? What's a firewall?

Back then "WWW" did not mean "World Wide Web" - it meant "Wild Wild West" and oh boy was it. I vivdly remember the first animated GIF, back when e-mail was called "Higgins Mail" because that was app of choice and those wonderful Neal Stephenson novels where there was so much digital information being trasmitted wirelessly that the sky glowed with streams of raw data.

And guess what, all without Government meddling. No, the WWW was self regulated. You pissed off enough folks and you got knocked off the 'net. Geniouses created amazing technologies that have been either coopted or dumbed down. In the late '80s you could send an email, post on a BBS or any other transmission with the word:

KIBO

And he'd respond.

The only involvement the Government needs in the 'Net is the involvment directed under preambl's directive to "promote the general Welfare" and invest int he broadband infrastructure of the Nation.

Oh, but wait..... that would further allow freedom of speach & promote assembly to air grevences. Scratch that idea.

I for one fear that what ever they do will mess it up and make things worse...seems to be what happens every time the government gets involved in private affairs.

It's has always struck me as odd when some old fart like Leahy shows interest in something like this.. All his cute little speeches and buzz words add up to one thing in my mind,,. " Regulation of the masses" , Just one more place the idiots in DC think they need to screw with for "our" good.. Leahy is another of those useless old school DC power addicts that needs to be put out to pasture where he can't do any more damage to the country,.
