Shooting on public land?

I currently live near Lake Anna in Spotsylvania county and was wondering if anyone knew the rules or regs on target shooting on unposted/public land. There is a huge parcel of land near me which I know is not private which I simply want to use for an area for target practice (.40 cal and .223 rifle), however I wasn't sure if I had to be a certain distance from the road or a certain distance from the nearest residence, etc. Any advice would be most welcome.

You need to check your local county laws and be prepared for someone to call the sheriff depending on the area.

Yep and make sure its public. I'd try to find out who and what government has jurisdiction. If none then its probably private.

I can save you a phone call. No target shooting on public lands unless there is a range there such as Amelia wildlife management area.

Im near Zions Cross Rd and Hite Hollow is the closest public place I have found that allows both rifle and pistol. If anyone knows of a closer place please let me know. I am also considering RRPC. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding membership there? The price sure seems very reasonable
