California bans mail order and internet sale of pistol ammo

I suppose this has likely been discussed here before, but I wanted to bring I up again since this new law is set to go into effect on 1 Feb 2011.
I had to look this up because I received an order today for 14 boxes of #8 12ga shotshells. Turns out, this purchase will be OK since it's not ammunition that "can be used in a pistol".

What's their definition of "pistol"?
I ask because smooth-bored pistols are permitted in California. So shotgun ammo can conceivably be pistol ammo (as it can in most of the country and federally).

I wish I could say I would never live there because of such a stupid law, but that was already the case because of so many other stupid laws in that state.

Massachusetts has already done this. I used to live there and it was real annoying. We had everything shipped to a friend's house in New Hampshire. These places are adding one inconvenience after another.
Something to consider since the man is removing our freedoms daily... Top Gun Supply has pre-ban Colt 30-round AR-15 mags for sale for $17.95. They are brand new. I just picked up 10 with an order for 10 more for sometime in the future will be returning to the Socialist Republic of Massachusetts. But in the meantime, I am loving Virginia!!!

Unless you have a license to carry even possession is illegal if this source is correct.
The sale, offering for sale, transfer or
possession of large capacity feeding devices for assault weapons (as defined under Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 140, § 121), is prohibited
unless such device was lawfully possessed on September 13, 1994. Ch. 140, § 131M.
Under Massachusetts law, a “large capacity feeding device” is defined as: “(i) a fixed or detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip or similar device capable of accepting, or that can be readily converted to accept,
more than ten rounds of ammunition or more than five shotgun shells; or (ii) a large capacity ammunition feeding device as defined in the federal Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, 18 U.S.C. section 921(a)(31) as appearing in such section on September 13, 1994.” Ch. 140, § 121. This does not include “an attached tubular device designed to accept, and capable of operating only with, .22 caliber ammunition.” Id.
Large capacity feeding devices designed for large capacity rifles and shotguns may be lawfully possessed by a holder of a Class A or B license to carry. Ch. 140, § 131(a), (b)(ii). Large capacity feeding devices designed for handguns may be possessed only by persons holding a Class A license to carry. Ch. 140, § 131(a).
The Massachusetts Secretary of Public Safety (“Secretary”) is required to compile and publish a roster of large capacity handguns, rifles, shotguns and feeding devices for those firearms, as those weapons and devices are defined in Ch. 140, § 121. Ch. 140, § 131 3/4. The Secretary may amend the roster upon his or her own initiative, upon the initiative of the Gun Control Advisory Board under Ch. 140, § 131 1/2, or upon the petition of any person seeking to place a weapon on or remove a weapon from the roster. Ch. 140, § 131 3/4.

Thanks for not just stopping all sales. The gun owners in California appreciate it.
The Calguns Foundation had a few lawsuits against this, but two got thrown out because they werent " ripe" so people are trying to fight this garbage. Unfortunately, the situation is likely going to get worse as more right-minded people leave the insanity. I'm one.
You can also ship to C&R holders with a certificate of eligibility.

Like rromeo, I can't go back there, either. Cabela's is offering a "California-specific" handgun ammo sale now, in light of this EVIL new law.
Over on CalGuns, there are a lot of shooters who don't yet reload. I'm doing everything I can to tell 'em that yes, we must fight this EVIL law, but in the meantime...START RELOADING YOUR OWN!!! It is not that expensive to get started, i. e. you don't "need" to drop all that coin on a Dillon press to get started. That can come later if you want and if your shooting needs require it.

Gunderwood....good catch. You are correct. However, there is no onus on the owner to prove when the mag was purchased, just that it was manufactured before the ban. Letter of the law, unless you had 'em before the ban, you are looking at only enjoying 10 round mags. Thanks for clarifying.

For those who care....I just spoke with a friend in MA who is anal about understanding his rights... He explained MA law. As long as the mag (or gun) was lawfully possessed prior to the ban, a high capacity mag or pre-ban gun is legal to have on hand to purchase or sell today. You just cannot ship things to MA. The law was poorly written (MA education system is not great). All agree it is murky. It is different from I believe NJ who completely bans mags over 10 rounds. For MA you cannot ship. Most vendors won't even ship BB Guns because they don't want to deal with the B.S.

Will be a real trip to see what Governor Moonbeam (Jerry Brown) does in conjunction with any gun legislation that crosses his desk in CA,,, My guess is shoot down anything Pro and sign anything Anti...... MA is just a lost cause I think

Yes but the key to the ruling was "vaguely worded." They will fix that real quick no doubt. It was not overturned due to an amendment issue such as #2...

We sell to California . You have to be mindful of DOJ Firearms List. Also get your CFLC # .But Being told what gun you can have is the Problem . The DOJ gives you a choice.LOL Somebody forgot to tell those politicians That California is Still in America.Thank god I do not live in California. New York is Bad enough.
