I kid you not, this situation actually occurred at the Huntington Metro station on a summer afternoon in 2008. Afternoon rush hour, a big crowd heading up the escalator... the normal maddening pattern: folks standing on the right-hand side and people walking up the left-hand side... then some woman on the left-hand side stops walking about a third of the way up. Typical pattern that occurs every day, right? But it gets better as a few seconds after she stops and she's at about the midway point, the escalator shuts down...

And she continues to stand. And the right-hand side lazies continue to stand. The two women at the head of the escalator stood up there exasperated for a good 10 seconds until the hollering and cursing from people like me down below sunk through their skulls.

I could not believe what I had just witnessed. First thing when I saw my wife that night, I relayed the story and I don't even know if she believed me.
