Virginia Gun Owners Forum - VGOF

I'm new to the concept of hunting/shooting preserves. As I see quite a few listed in VA, most of them offer guided hunts. What would be a typical gratitude to the guide? A % of the price, a set amount $ per hour or...?

I've never used them. I plan on it whenever I can make it out west or to Alaska for a big game hunt. Given the price of the hunts (out west at least) I'm not sure why I would tip. They seem to be making a nice profit off of the hunt. Since I've never used them, perhaps I'm out of line on this.

I feel the same. If you are going to pay a big amount of money for the guide to guide you, then why would you tip them.... they are already doing what you paid them to do.

Many guides working for someone else depend on tips. They get paid dribbles just like waitresses. Below minimum wage. Tips bring them up to poverty level. Plus a tip is given or withheld to show your appreciation or otherwise of the services rendered. Many jobs out there like this. My wife Young is a barber and she gets a cut of each cut plus tips...

They can run from $500. for a half day hunt too $1000.+ a day. depends on what you are hunting and how big is the land and hurd. I've seen soom good ones for about $800. for a two day hunt in Texas.

Rule of thumb: if the guide cleans your game, then tip 15% or more. The preserve mrgrs should be able to tell you if guides work for tips or not. Tipping policy has always been clearly stated at the places where I've hunted using guides.
