Hello all, I am checking into buying a arisaka that states 308 cal on the side. My question is this, does this rifle shoot the standard 308 winchester round or does it shoot the 7.7 x 56 round only. I'm a unsure of this matter and have not been able to find any quality help on the internet this morning. I hope someone out there that has experience in this arena can help out, thanks in advance. Joshua

The funny thing is that for years now when I'm on the computer my wife will ask me what I'm doing. I tell her I'm looking at porn and she usually comes in the office and looks. She will usually laugh or get a smug look on her face when she sees that my "porn" is usually a hot, oily and ready to go sniper rifle! I saw that smiley things and laughed. My wife would love it.

I checked and can't come up with a 7.7x56, how about a 7.7x58 ? Since it's an old military weapon it's more than likely been rebarreled to .308. Let a good gunsmith check it out to be sure.

+1
I would find it odd for the Japanese to mark anything besides metric. It is possible someone rebarreled it, and Wikipedia notes that this was sometimes done with 30-06, but from the description I think it kills the brass. I would have a gunsmith look at it. Take it to a gun show and find one of the war rifle dealers/smiths. Don't bother taking it to your local sports store as they likely won't know anything about it.

I just bought an Arisaka T38 with 308 marked on the barrel. I would like to see photos of yours as I am trying to figure out if mine is someones home made 308 or if it is part of some larger project. Mine does not have and does not look like it ever had a mum. See photos of mine at

Thank you to everyone for the info. I will be bringing this rifle to a class A gunsmith and have him check it out for me. In the mean time, I tried to look at the pictures of the type 38 rifle but the pictures would not load for viewing. Maybe you could send them to me direct. Does anyone have any idea where to get a synthetic stock for the Arisaka?
Thank you.

Been watching Beck again, and damn he's done it again. My country is under attack from within, didn't my oath and other vets oaths say something along the lines of, "foreign and domestic?"
