So far this year I've either seen nothing or gotten two deer. Shot two does back to back earlier and today nabbed a button buck and a 2 pointer back to back. Getting them on the run is a challenge. Got to process some meat.

Nice job! I'm sitting on 3 for the season so far... a 2-pt buck, and two doe. I'm spending the better part of the next two weeks in the woods to try and finish filling the freezer for the year.

All four were taken with a Marlin 1895 and Hornady LeverRevolution 325gr FTX. Three dropped immediately and didn't take a single step. One went 10 ft. I'll post pics of the blood trail.

This is the second one, which I shot on the run. The shot as a bit high and took out the backbone. .45/70 is artillery so it shoots high at <100 yards and I miss judged the distance on a running target (was about 50 yards...I was thinking more like 75 as the first was just under 100 yards). This is the only one I've had to track at all this year (first year using this gun and getting deer with it). However, the shot was a bit too far back to keep it from using the front legs so it, I put a second round into the neck/head so it wouldn't suffer.
Initial trail! Tracking .45/70 style.
Final blood trail...10 feet away.
Pair of deer.

My favorite is still just a plain 'ol crock post roast with onions and mashed potatoes. Other top items include burgers, tacos, and home smoked venison pepperoni and summer sausage. Just started experimenting with jerkifying venison and wild turkey this year.

Good grief I better get busy. I've only bagged 2 bucks so far this year. I'd like one more. Maybe, just maybe.

If, you know, your freezer is a bit stuffed I'll trade brass for deer.
Specifically chili meat.

#4 of the year.... 2.5 y/o doe from AP Hill. 50 yard shot with 20 ga. slug. Hit her a little far forward and she ran about 30 yards, but it got the job done with very little meat damage!
