Florida legislature takes up firearms carry reform

Florida Senator Greg Evers is sponsoring legislation to reform many of Florida’s highly restrictive handgun carry and purchasing laws. If passed in its current form, SB-234 will legalize many activities already lawful in other states.

Since 1987 the State of Florida has issued nearly 2 million Concealed Weapon or Firearms Licenses (CWFL) that allows people to carry a concealed firearm if they pay a fee, have had appropriate training, a criminal background check with FBI fingerprint search, and are over the age of 21. In the licensing program’s 23 year history only 168 licenses have been revoked for improper use or display of a firearm.

This shows Florida CWFL licensees to be demographically one of the most law abiding groups for which data is available.

Campus carry for CWFL holders only benefits a very small contingent of upperclassmen and possibly faculty.

It would leave a large portion of the student body still defenseless, since CWFL is only granted to over-21.

That leaves 18, 19 and 20 y.o.s (freshmen, sophomores and most juniors) up the creek and still just as defenseless as if campus conceal carry were to pass.

I will not send one thin dime to any university which prohibits lawful carry of firearms. As far as I am concerned the only lessons those institutions are teaching is how to be a slave and a coward.

Too bad carry--OC or CC with CHP--is prohibited by most VA institutions of higher learning with wide-scale firearms bans. Age 18 OC makes very little difference in the scheme of campus carry.

Yes, but the discussion was about allowing it as a way to avoid the mass shootings. If they can change the law for CC, they can do so for OC too. Making public institutions abide by VA law is a good thing IMHO.

Duh. Ya think. This is a no brainer -- they take a pretty close look at ya before simply handing one of those over...
