I'm looking to clone a couple of loads, and therefore need a chronograph. My local options for shooting ranges include both indoor (NRA Range) and outdoor (Clark Bros). Is the special add-on for dealing with florescent lights really needed? I'd much rather spend the money on expendables if it is not required.

I'm new to reloading and don't have a chrono yet. Don't you have to have it about 10' downrange? I don't think that would work at the NRA would it? I'd love to find out I'm wrong.

I would 'try' your chrony @ NRA but I suspect you would need the interior lighting add-on there. At Clark Bros. if it is sunny out, you're good!

You can shoot through the wands right at the end of the muzzle ..... the chrony doesn't care.

Reviews on the various machines at MidwayUSA.com recommend that the chrono be placed on the order of 10 feet away from the muzzle. Which firearms and chronograph have you had good luck with at your closer range?

I've made some phone calls since my post. NRA and Blue Ridge Arsenal ranges are hot all the time, so no opportunity to set up the chronograph. The fellow that answered the phone at Clark Brothers recommended that I use the chronograph only on weekday mornings to reduce the chances that someone else might accidentally shoot my hardware. If I can put the chrono on a tripod just past the shooting bench and someone STILL hits it, I'm at the wrong range.

I stand corrected .... you are right in saying that you need to place the chrony off the line for pistols and rifles (I mainly use mine for Pellet, Airsoft or Paintball tuning as I have not started reloading yet ... are you willing to teach flashman ?) because muzzle blast will affect the readings.

The Quantico Shooting Club will let you set-up whatever you want to shoot or shoot-through and their ranges do go 'cold' to change/hang/paste targets. If you want I can get you on as a guest for $10 for the day.
