What can you say to something like this, besides  No wonder they all want to leave and come here to the U.S.A.

I find it incredible that American tourists still go to Mexico.

No doubt, Jim! Anyone know if Belize is a comparatively safe place to vacation?

Even after the Haiti disaster, I have heard great things about the Dominican Republic.

+1! I have never had a desire to vacation there. I wonder if it's because it's so cheap?

Yeah I would never vacation there! Heck it would be a stretch to get me to NY or California.

It's no wonder the people of Arizona are so wound up about the current situation. Hell, if I lived only miles from an environment like that, I'd be tempted to relocate by hundreds of miles.
Thank God I live in the mountains of Virginia.

KaosMom kidnapped me to Cancun one year (anniversary). Yes, it's cheap. Some of the packages are amazing and if you like ruins and such the Yucatan can be spectacular. Also, if you go with a group there is literally something for eveyone.

Havign said that - been twice and unless I have the cash to do the Yucatan ruins the right way - not going back.

I'd go to the ruins since I'm a history geek. Beach? We have wonderful beaches right here in the USA. I won't lie, I'd go to a beach in the EU, but that's another story.

Belize is nice. I have co-workers and friends that go all the time. It was a British colony until 1981 - nominally in 1964 - and is a lot more stable than some of the other nations in the area.

The major tourist areas are still relatively safe because the army and police actively patrol the ports and even some streets.

It won't stay that way, but that's how it was last time we were in Cabo and Mazatlan.

With the two Mexican "pirates" on the Texas/Mexico border Falcon Lake killing the dude on the jetski. The Mexican govt not cooperating with an investigation, the lead Mexican homicide detective in the case winding up with his head in a box (ala the movie Seven), the entire police force that abandoned their brand new police dept after just 3 days when 1000 bullets and 6 grenades hit their new police department, the 20 year old college student that was elected mayor of a town because all the past leaders were run off, abducted or murdered...

Yeah, that is just the last 30 days. I think I'll avoid Mexico for awhile. I think we need to think about beefing up the border a bit more, if Mexico gets to out of hand, who knows what could come our way. We are connected, whether people want to admit it or not.

On the other hand, its a huge country with a ton of people, so I guess the numbers aren't as bad as it seems. Still, the numbers are enough to keep me away for awhile.

I think you are all showing your racist roots. Mexico is simply going through a developmental stage and "evolving" into its own version of a butterfly......

I left AZ in 2000. It was just starting to get bad. Back in the 80s an excursion across the border was routine. Many things cheaper and your money went alot farther. Alot of folks got some good dental work done cheap. The clues started around 96 when insurance companies started requiring riders to cover you in Mexico and rental companies no longer allowed their vehicles across the border at all. No fun at all sitting on the side of your favorite deer hunting canyon watching illegals troop north across the desert...literally. Many of my favorite haunts are now rubbish heaps and you take your life in your own hands stepping out there...

Belize is a great place to visit. I've been and I plan to go back.

As mentioned earlier, it is a former british colony and so the locals speak english. The accent is similar to what you'd hear in Jamaica. Safe country, good food, good beer, great diving and snorkeling. Lots of American condos down there b/c the laws allow non-citizens to own property. From Houston you can fly there in 3 hrs.
