[Video] CIWS - My Favorite Machine Gun

Post by allingeneral »

Alright, it's actually considered a Gatling Gun. At 3,000 rounds per minute (that's 50 rounds per second!) of 20mm depleted uranium, there aren't many guns that can compete.

I remember when they where testing those out at the base. I like it a little hard to conceal though.

Sea Whiz, Phalanx. Cool stuff but I would hate to feed it. :tommygun:

Actually the M61 Vulcan 20mm gatling gun is better and was invented for the Army of course. It's rate selectable 6000 rpm or 4000 rpm - in case you don't want to melt the barrels to quickly. I loved watching those things fire at the range. Maximum firepower.

Yeah, but why scare em when it would be just as easy to shred em? I'd hate to be on the gun cleaning crew though.

The one centerfire which I can claim to be a certified gunsmith on. The M61A1 and A2 are actually capable of 7,200 RPM, but there is no feed system capable of feeding it at that rate. Being 20mm, it's officially a cannon.
The old Tomcat slogan used to be "There is no kill like a guns kill". That changed not long after my shop did the first bomb loading of an F-14 after a protracted absence from the air-to-ground arena.
It then became "There is no kill like a guns kill, except for a Laser-Guided Bomb through a sunroof".
