FirearmsTruth.com
Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- While much of the mainstream media ignored the Korean M1 story, there is still hope for collectors that the rifles, which were blocked for importation to the United States, could still return home.

Rep. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) and Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) have sponsored a bill “to amend the Arms Export Control Act to provide that certain firearms listed as curios or relics may be imported into the United States by a licensed importer without obtaining authorization from the Department of State or the Department of Defense, and for other purposes.”

In a statement Rep. Lummins said:

“The State Department does not have the authority to deny legal firearms to law-abiding citizens. These
firearms have historical value, are legal, and their importation is already highly regulated by the Justice
Department.

There is no basis for State Department involvement. This is not about diplomacy or foreign policy — this is a domestic issue and a Second Amendment issue.” In a statement Rep. Donnelly said:

“The right of law-abiding American citizens to import these historical firearms should not be complicated with unnecessary over-regulation. This common-sense change simply lets the Justice Department do its job and removes the State Department from the process.”

The bill was introduced on September 29, 2010, and referred to committee, which is the first step in the
legislative process. We’ll be sure to watch for updates on this bill.

This bill is grandstanding. It's DOA in this congress. Next one? Depends on what happens in the Senate.

This is an interesting case of meddling being potentially bad in the instant (everyone sees us basically telling the ROK they can sell us back the equipment that we loaned them, they figure us for being even bigger suckers than they already knew), and good in the long term if it actually strips State of the authority to interfere with imports. Depends on how the law's actually written.

Something has to quell the current trend of bypassing Congress while allowing Federal agencies and Judges to act far above their authority...

Well to borrow from the handbook "Rules for Radicals" their own tactics can be used against them...just like hippies, instead of poking flowers into rifle barrels, tar can be poked into the gun tubes of tanks...

1) Rules for Conservative Radicals; a new book I will soon be reading. Kinda applies to this thread. U take Alinski's concepts and apply them on our side.

2) I may be soon coming down on the side of "I oughta own an M1 carbine." I have been on the fence and this oughta improve an availability and price situation!
