Papa John's deliveryman shoots gunman in face

By Evrod Cassimy

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) – A pistol-packing, pizza delivery man, fights back and shoots an armed robber. Now that suspect and three others are facing charges.
They're accused of basically stalking the man, then jumping him, after he delivered a pizza to a home on the 8000 block of Possum Trail in Mechanicsville. The driver left the pizza place to make a delivery, unaware that four people were watching his every move. One of them, wearing a ski mask and carrying a BB gun tried to rob him, but the pizza guy was ready for him.
Dana Trader and her son, Matt, can still see the blood from a man shot in their driveway. They're the ones who ordered the pizza from Papa Johns on Sunday. Moments after the delivery guy gave them their pizza, he was jumped.
"Next thing you know I heard a gunshot and I thought, 'that can't be a gunshot not here no way!'" said Dana Trader. "I just saw feet. I just saw that somebody was down but I never saw the robbers or anything."
The delivery driver had just delivered the pizza when he was approached by the suspect carrying a gun. He pulled out his own gun from his car and shot the suspect in the face.
"I would have done the same thing!" said Dana's son, Matt. "Really, it's kill or be killed out here! One second later he could have been the one getting shot."
The driver was followed by the suspect from the Papa Johns on Mechanicsville Turnpike to the Trader's home where the shooting happened. Dana believes this incident will serve as a lesson for anyone looking to target delivery drivers in the future.
"They only have a certain amount of change so you're not going to get a whole lot from a pizza driver but you might get a pistol," said Dana. "They put their lives in a lot of danger to deliver a $12 pizza. Is it worth it?"
A Papa John's spokesperson wouldn't tell us whether they allow delivery drivers to carry guns. They did tell us that the driver's employment status will be determined once the investigation is complete.
The suspect, 26-year-old Brandon Floyd was taken to MCV and is currently receiving treatment for his injuries. The mug shots for Floyd and the three others charged in this incident are not being released because they could be related to other robberies in other areas.

Just had Papa John's pizza last night. They better not crucify this guy for defending himself. I'd hate to have to go back to Dominoes.

More detailed article. Turns out the driver had a concealed permit. Comments section is a good read.

Good for him. My brother was jumped, beaten, and carjacked many years ago when working for Papa Johns delivering pizzas. Suspicious call came in, my brother told the manager NO one delivers pizzas to that neighborhood and that not even the cops go in without backup, but forced him to go. Gets there, the person said I didn't order pizza, brother gets jumped and beaten very badly.

Store manager tried to have my brother arrested for not paying back the cost of the pizzas. Classy.

I don't think I would deliver pizzas in today's world unless I was armed, and esp. not in Newport News.

Too bad your brother couldn't show that manager a little hands on demonstration of what its like to get jumped ,beaten and carjacked.... May have changed his attitude a whole lot....

I'm glad swift justice was served. And, yeah, hopefully Papa Johns doesn't axe the guy, but I'm not holding my breath. It's ridiculous what people will do for a few bucks - I mean, what's a pizza guy carry at most - $40 or $50? Personally, I think for convenience and safety pizza joints should just start a debit/credit card only policy for delivery. Take some of the risk out of the equation, and the driver won't get stiffed upon delivery. When people b*tch and moan, point to things like this. It's 2010 for Pete's sake - who doesn't have a flippin' debit card?

I also wish that Ledo's delivered to Springfield. :)

I bet he gets fired and will also probably get sued by the robber and ACLU. Good for him protecting himself though. To quote a line from The Hangover, "In the face!!" :machinegun:

If Papa John's has an ounce of PR savvy, they'll wait a couple weeks for the attention to fade before firing the guy. He'll be on unpaid leave until then, of course.

Well, I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that Papa John's delivery wasn't his only gig...

As for firing, well, Virginia is one of those 'at will' states...

Who's Will, and what did he do to deserve being fired at?

I hear that he once shot a man in Reno. And that he may have shot a sheriff, but I'm pretty sure he didn't kill the deputy. That Will's a bad mofo.

I used to deliver pizza for Chanellos in Norfolk. I got mugged twice. The second time was in a nice hotel at Waterside. That was it. The two nights I wasn't carrying were the two nights I got mugged. I had to go to the ER after the second one.

Dang man, glad you lived to tell about it! (PM me details?) It's crap like this that made me start carrying when I was working with a mobile unlocking company here in Richmond. Got sent to FAR too many shady neighborhoods. A few times, I even got the dreaded "I didn't require service...." from some people. Crap like that puts you on edge!
I really do hope they don't fire the driver for defending hisself. I wasn't actually aware that companies like that allowed for any kind of carry. Good for them :) I know I wasn't supposed to, but I didn't feel safe unless I did. I'm a pretty big guy, but I'm not exactly Cashis Clay, you know?

The driver is a hero. Hell, the thieves could've taken him out, then very possibly gone after the people who lived nearby, who knows? Justice was served.

They don't. Which is why this guy's job is probably history.

Well, if you live you can always find another job.

Also:

1. Rocky Rococco
2. Godfathers
3. Papa John
4. Pizza Hut
5. New Dominoes

And in the future I will be careful about having a tip ready.

Dang, that sucks. Hopefully they can now be pursuaded to change that policy, see as this guy could've been killed if it weren't for his actions. He's still a hero, fired or not. :-/

BTW, PJs has a web feed back site that a lot of the MD Shooters went to to support this guy. I suggest we do the same.

I did delivery in North Carolina years ago and had many close calls. I had 5 robbery attempts (never got robbed), an attempted van jacking and got fired from a Durham Pizza Hut when I pulled my weapon because our assistant manager was being beaten by 3 nice young folks. I saved him and lost the crappy job. Looking back I was lucky I wasn't killed because it was like the wild west and the shops do not care about your safety, only their money.
