Threadjack: I'm not so sure. It'll be interesting to see what happens. Unless the Republicans completely blow their chances (which can't be ruled out), the hill might not be so steep - or not as steep as one might think. Last I heard, our Democrat-heavy Congressional approval rating was somewhere around 11%.graybeard321 wrote: We have a very steep uphill battle in November.
I forget where I saw the article, but I somewhat recall reading that the difference in percentage of people that vote during a presidential election and a midterm election (or other not-Presidential election for that matter) is staggering. Far fewer people vote in mid-terms - something in the 30-40% range for midterms (for instance) versus over 70% for Presidential. So, I suppose it's not only a matter of who's voting, but what percentage of the population is voting. Note: those percentages may be a little off, but the difference is still pretty ridiculous.VBshooter wrote:That too can work in the Repubs favor,,,there are some seriously PO"d people in the country that will go vote in November come hell or high water. This being a mid term and no culture hero running will keep a lot of the liberal vote at home watching the tube on election day.

The outcry should have come long before this. Its kinda like we walk by the barn with the door hanging open and dont see horses running out and so all is well. But the moment we see horses running from the barn we start yelling, alert our buddies, and pitch tantrums. "Quick, close the door." We passed our chance to close the door long ago and the horsies are long gone. In addition, the well has been poisoned and roaches infest the house. Better to burn the whole place down and find new ground cause the barn done be empty...
Hmm...I'm having some trouble accepting that. That "barn" is our country, which still maintains the best framework in the world. It's all the rotted siding, add-ons, corroded window frames, and un-maintained flooring that is the problem. I do agree that We, The People, neglected to care for our "barn". But We, The People, can fix it.zephyp wrote:@Everybody - folks, the bottom line is this...its too late to get upset about this one and a lot of others. How do you change it or guard it when anyone who tries is labeled an extremist, a militia member, a dumb, ignorant redneck, anarchist, terrorist, <insert name here>? I'm being 100% serious. Stand up against the status quo, against the use of government to solve all problems (i.e. stand for liberty) and you will be labeled this way. If the average American just ignored it, it wouldn't work. However, try getting elected and truly be pro-gun (think Constitutional carry, state preemption, 10th amendment firearm freedom, etc.). You wouldn't make it out of the primary in one piece, which is why it is so hard to fix.zephyp wrote:@Cowboy - we are saying the same things just in different terms. I'm not trying to create a metaphor that the country should be abandoned...no siree...but we do need to step up and do some major repairs after we put out the fire. And, I still contend that merely voting will not be enough. Thats how we got to where we are today. Once we get the major renovation done then we must stand guard and protect it...the point is we can no longer afford to just vote and then have no other recourse except to wait until its time to vote again.
Yes I realize we can speak out and protest but we've seen so many times over the last couple of years that is not always effective and for us has not been at all...
We MUST get ourselves away from thinking only in terms of pulling that lever every 2, 4, or 6 years. There have to be other ways - more effective and more immediate - for we the people to exert the power granted by the Constitution.gunderwood wrote:How do you change it or guard it when anyone who tries is labeled an extremist, a militia member, a dumb, ignorant redneck, anarchist, terrorist, <insert name here>? I'm not sure there's much other than lobbying (which, to be really effective, is simply bribery). The purpose of the Constitution was to ensure that the People didn't exert power directly, hence why they created a Republic with a lot of checks and cutouts to keep the people from having their way too easily and/or quickly. They made the (fatal) assumption that the voting class would continue to be made up of stakeholders in society who would make rational decisions.zephyp wrote:There have to be other ways - more effective and more immediate - for we the people to exert the power granted by the Constitution.
